Catholic Parish Plans Rectory At St Mary's This Summer

Excavation to start within two weeks for an eight room brick rectory for St Mary's Catholic parish south of the church. Estimated cost twenty two thousand dollars. Rev L Ve McDonough announced plans for the pastor's home with a basement finished room and attached garage. General contractor is Joe G Cervetti of Steamboat Rack. bids are being taken for the project.

Borers May Attack Corn in 2 Weeks

Hardin county corn fields may face the 1951 crop of first broad corn borers in about two weeks. County extension director Dick Pulse warns farmers to inspect spray equipment and prepare materials now as warm weather could trigger a peak egg laying period around June 17, risking substantial damage to a large acreage.

Memorial Trapshoot Planned by Wildlife Club

Pine Lake Wildlife Club announces a memorial trapshoot honoring former president J. B. Davidson. The event, featuring suitable prizes, is set for Sunday June 10 at the club grounds. Details appear in the display space on Page 7 Section 2 of this paper.

County funds aid Tokyo Christian University chapel drive

A county campaign sent 1846.72 to support a chapel at the International Christian University in Tokyo. Eastman Nuckolls, county treasurer, notes the money was held for second phase participation in early May. Eldora reports 917.95 toward county totals with Kiwanis clubs and churches contributing. Other county gifts include Steamboat Rock 100, Hubbard Zion 200, Salem Evangelical 148.86, New Providence 59.04, and many smaller donations across Hardin county.

Pfander Jewelry Store Opens in Eldora Custom Shop near June 30

Claude Pfander, from Shenandoah, moves to Eldora to remodel and open Pfander Jewelry in the former Gamble building around June 30. He and his wife and 21 month old daughter Claudette reside near the Baptist church parsonage. Enrollment at Iowa Training School for Boys has risen from 147 to 240 in the last 18 months.

June Marriage Licenses Issued In Four Days

County Clerk Fred L. Miller issued nine marriage licenses in the first four working days of June. Couples include Lowell Aschkrat 20 and Janet Ziebel 19 of Hubbard, Donald Dass 21 and Virginia Wilson 19 of Radcliffe, Leon Ramundé 19 of Reinbeck and Frances Matbius 22 of Gif ford, plus James Lee 31 of Garden City and Esther Schulz 25 of Radcliffe connected to the week’s registrations.

Sewer Extension Bids Opened June 25 For Liberty Park Area

Eldora city council on Monday night approved plans and contract forms for a sewer extension to serve Liberty Park and city fringes. A resolution of necessity was provisionally adopted and construction ordered with bids to be advertised. Project cost was estimated at about $70,000 a year ago.

Permit Night Sees City Council Grant Building Licenses

Eldora city council held a regular meeting labeled permit night approving three building permits and renewing 24 cigarette licenses along with four beer permits. St Mary’s Catholic church received a free permit to erect a brick rectory costing about 22 thousand dollars. Louis Kebsehall won a permit to build a 32 by 28 foot house with a 14 by 22 garage on east 17th avenue. W A Dunn was authorized to build a 12 by 18 garage on south 15th street. Schumacher Grocery earned a cigarette permit for the first time amid renewals for 24 other establishments including BR and W Cafe, King’s Station, Harmon's Station, McDonald Pool Hall, Bowman Recreation Parlor.

Five Saylor children undergo tonsil surgery at Eldara

Five Saylors had tonsils removed at Eldara Memorial Hospital in a Monday operation. Rita 17 Donna 16 James 13 Karen 10 and Richard 6 lost their adenoids and tonsils under Dr J J Shorts care. They spent the night and left the hospital Tuesday morning feeling better.

Saylors Face Hospital Streak With Five Siblings Ill

In Eldora, the Saylor family endures a hospital run as five siblings, Barbara 12, Mary Ellen 11, Robert 9, Thomas 8, Dennis 3, underwent tonsillectomies under Dr Shorts on March 23. Father serves as head custodian for Eldora schools and grounds. Mrs Saylor, about to nurse at home, anticipates soup and soft foods. Brother Joe acts as chauffeur. A prior family had a similar five-member hospitalization recent months.

Fred Edgar, 85, a retired jeweler and patient at Eldora Memorial Hospital, was reported Wednesday to be gradually improving as doctors monitor his condition and recovery progresses.

Public Invited to Hear Landscape Architect in Eldora

Landscape architect Margherita Tarr of Iowa State College will lead a public meeting Saturday at 8:30 a.m. in the library basement. She will advise Eldora residents on pine tree planting and landscaping, and survey local properties to offer recommendations for Eldora as “The Pine City of Iowa” by 1953. Representatives from organizations and property owners are urged to attend with sketches of lots, houses, garages, walks, and existing trees.

Mrs Paul C Wood Dies in Sheldon and Elders links

Mrs Paul C Wood 76 of Sheldon former Elders resident died May 10. She and husband lived in Elders 1904 to 1913 when he published the Elders Ledger. They then moved to Sheldon where he published the Sheldon Mail. She was active in the Methodist church and local groups. A separate record notes a Hardin County Farm Supply Co suit against Alvin Kilker for 282 dollars for three tons of fertilizer.

Vacation Church Schools In Session at Two Congregations

At St Paul Lutheran church the vacation school has 96 enrolled with Bible study handiwork and mission studies emphasized. A closing program Friday at eight with a Sunday picnic June 7 at the air grounds follows. At the Baptist church about 60 enrolled with a goal of 100 and an attendance contest. The Rev. Russel Barnes of Des Moines assists. The school closes with a program Friday evening next week.

Paul E Maddy Named New On Farm Veterans Instructor

G I instructor Paul E Maddy slated to take over Eldora on farm veterans training class starting July 1 after Charles Smith resigns to lead the high school agriculture department. Maddy, 1846 Town State College graduate, has five years of high school vocational ag teaching in Story City and Dunkerton, is married with two daughters.

Joint school run by Methodist and Congregational churches

A combined church school with 143 pupils conducts morning sessions. The Congregational side hosts 33 beginners and 13 kindergartners, while the Methodist side has 44 primaries, 44 juniors, and 9 intermediates. St Mary's Church Catholic School Sets Dates for Holy Communion

About seventy children attend a two week catechism school at St Mary's Catholic church led by Rev Father L V McDonough and three Sisters of the Humility of Mary from Otumwi. A program precedes the Altar and Rosary society on June 19. First Holy Communion is set for Sunday June 37 as the closing religion school event.

Church of Christ School Prepares Palestine Noah Ark Programs

Forty five students enroll in the Church of Christ school with an intermediate group making a Palestine map and primary class building a Noah s ark. Juniors do notebook work and handwork while kindergartners and beginners have age suited programs. A public program is planned at the school’s close.

Plaintiffs file 40 page argument in church case

A 90 page written brief with excerpts from exhibits and testimony was filed in district court Wednesday by plaintiffs in the Church of Christ dispute against Rev. L. R. Schuler and church officers. Judge Clock heard seven days of trial last month. oral arguments were waived for written briefs. Defendants have two weeks to file their brief, plaintiffs 10 days for a reply, then the court’s decree. Paul C. Walters and Howard L. Bump represented plaintiffs. E. H. State Psychologist Lowell Shen ke cooperated with school staff to test 107 boys Monday for information to guide vocational education.
