Eldora Blood Drive Nets 95 Pints In Emergency Drive
A total of 95 pints were collected at Eldora’s annual Red Cross blood drive held Tuesday in the old Eldora gym under the direction of Waterloo Regional Blood Center nurses. About 25 area volunteers aided by Eldora Community Hospital Auxiliary members assisted doctors and nurses. With a 200 pint goal, organizers say the drive will not be repeated until next year, as the program aims to meet needs for emergencies at the local hospital.

Pioneer Plaza work nears completion at courthouse entrance
Weather permitting the Pioneer Plaza planter pool fountain at the north courthouse entrance should be finished this weekend with pool equipment installed next week. The 36 by 15 foot unit carries a three foot planter border and rises about one foot above the curb. Brick steps on the west assembly terrace will be installed this week, as the final nine of 36 lights illuminate the courtyard sides and west and north sodding is set for Saturday.

Tornado Like Winds Sweep Farm Near Ackley
High winds and hail struck farms southeast of Ackley late Monday into Tuesday morning. At the Paul Wiarda farm the machine shed was damaged while adjacent houses and a barn remained intact. Debris strewn along the gravel road and trees toppled eastward. Hail ranging to golf-ball size hit Iowa Falls and Grundy Center areas with additional north Grundy County damage. Eldora Planning and Zoning voted to hire an engineering firm to study the area north and east of Pine Street including the O Bryon Crestview Addition east of Vinton Heights. The group wants adjoining residential zones reviewed before recommendations and notes future access roads should be planned now. Engineer Dwayne Garber said survey could be done by June 16 if approved. cost estimates will go to council next Monday. Memorial Day services at Union Cemetery featured an 18 flag avenue leading to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, lowered to half mast for the ceremony. Rev. Carmen Beach Wins Miss REC Title at Town Falls High
Carmen Beach daughter of Clarence Beach of New Providence was named Miss REC Town Falls at a ceremony in the high school auditorium. She is the third local winner in four years. Carol Maywood and Cathy Lawler both from Union previously held titles and competed for the Miss Iowa REC state crown in Des Moines in December. Also elected to the Town Paths Rural Electric Cooperative board were Leonard Greiner, Francis Krueger, and Jordan Bergland. Runners up were Sally Kubfus and Nancy Martens. Beach earns a $100 savings bond, Kubfus $50, Martens $25.

Carroll Hobson, 49, of Ridora, was named Thursday by Governor Ray to the State Soil Conservation Committee, filling the unexpired term of Wendelley Pellet. Hobson becomes the first Hardin County native on the panel, which governs district programs and watershed projects under the 1971 act.
