Owasa and Hubbard to Get Natural Gas by End of June

Weather permitting residents of Owasa and Hubbard should have access to natural gas by the end of June, announced Virgil Schmidt of the Iowa Electric Light and Power Co. Eldora. Northern Natural Gas Co. is building border stations to regulate gas pressure, paving the way for installation of distribution systems into Owasa and Hubbard, with work planned to complete by month’s end.

Eldora Pool Opens Despite Threatening Weather

Eldora Municipal Pool started on Memorial Day drawing about 100 swimmers due to threatening weather. The first boy was Robert Allbee and the first girl Barbara Geerdes, with hours 1 to 8 p.m. daily except Tuesday from 1 to 5 p.m.

David Piper Graduates from Wartburg College

David L. Piper, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Piper, graduates Wartburg College with a B A in general science and will teach physics and chemistry at Aplington High School. Mrs. Piper, a State University of Iowa alumna, will teach 10th to 12th grade English and dramatics in Aplington. The couple plans two months in southern states before moving to Plinaton.

Beginning Sunday June 4, services at the First Methodist Church of Eldora will be held at 9 and 10 a.m., one hour earlier than during the winter months.

Former Eldora Teacher to Join Iowa Group in India

Mrs. Davis Wortman, a former Eldora high school instructor, is among four Iowa State University faculty members chosen for a summer program to improve living standards in India. She left for India in mid May with her husband acting as administrative assistant. The former Enid Whade serves on ISU home management faculty in Ames.

The North Central Section of Iowa First Assembly of God Churches holds a monthly fellowship at Eldora Assembly of God Church on Monday June 5. About 75 attend the 3 p.m. service with Rev. Norman Tosten of Ames preaching and the 7:30 p.m. service led by Rev. A. E. Strang of Hudson at the in charge.

Thirty two people attended the second annual Eldora Toastmasters ladies night at Blanche and Ethel's Tea Room Friday. Burl Lehnus led the program with Walter Jeske in charge of table prayer and Orville Lamb on table topics. Ray Taylor Rolland Nolting and Paul Williams gave speeches while Warren McCormick evaluated, Lew Owings timed, and Wayne Bartholomew served as master.

Court of Awards Held for Girl Scouts Sunday

A Girl Scout court of awards will be held at the Hardin County Youth Building Sunday, June 4, beginning at 3 p.m. The event recognizes the achievements of local scouts and will feature ceremony and certificates.

Near Capacity Crowds At Circus Venue

Crowds filled the Cole Circus at the Hardin County Fairgrounds with about 1,200 in the afternoon and 1,400 in the evening, as capacity of 1,500 was approached. The Eldora Chamber of Commerce sponsored the local circus appearance.

Eight Thousand At Pine Lake Memorial Day Crowd

State Conservation Officer Gene Bloudek reports about 8000 visitors at Pine Lake State Park for Memorial Day. Fifty eight camping units housed around 300 people. eighteen units used on Memorial Day weekend. Angling was good with fish biting especially in early morning and evening.

Mrs Van Patter Dies Rites Today

Mrs. R. R. Van Patter of Hubbard died in an Iowa Falls hospital Wednesday at age 84. Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. from Salem Evangelical United Brethren Church in Hubbard, with burial in Hubbard Cemetery. She was sister of Mrs. Glen Whorrall of Eldora and survived by husband a secretary of Farmers Mutual Insurance Association, two daughters, two brothers, and other relatives. Judge Paroles 3 Hardin Youths

Three Hardin county teenagers were paroled after a three hour juvenile court hearing. Judge Harvey Uhlenhopp found no delinquency in any case. Iowa Falls Boy Drowned Monday

A 12 year old Iowa Falls boy, Richard Lee Brannick, fell from a raft into the Iowa River near the Boat Club on Monday afternoon and drowned. His body was recovered about 30 minutes later after failed resuscitation attempts. He was the Hardin county's first drowning victim of 1961. His mother, Mrs. Robert Kolthoff, had recently moved from Webster City.

Alden youths enlist in Marine Buddy Program

Alden boys Leslie Eugene Hurd and Ronald Eugene Simpson, sons of Mr and Mrs Hurd and Mr and Mrs Simpson, have enlisted in the Marine Corps Buddy Program. They are assigned to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego California for twelve weeks of basic training.

Steamboat Rock Cemetery Addition Nears Completion

Steamboat Rock burial lots will be ready for sale within 30 days at the Memorial Park Addition. Orville Asher, the project chairman, reports two years of work since starting on the addition that connects with the old cemetery. Road work is finished and lots will be marked off in coming weeks, with shrubbery to be planted this summer. The addition will serve Steamboat Rock burials for about 100 years. the old cemetery has roughly 56 unfilled lots. The Steamboat Rock Cemetery Association oversees the project with Leg Knight as president, Asher as vice president, L. G. Johnson as secretary, and board members Julia Johnson and Mrs. Ben Jaspers. The 1960 dam and drainage work were by Shore Construction of Eldora. road work by Larry McDowell. Keith Reece, ISU graduate engineer from New Providence, planned the addition. Markers will be level with the ground.

Bible Vacation Schools Start At Five Area Churches

Vacation Bible school starts Monday June 5 at five Eldora churches St Paul Lutheran St Marys Catholic Eldora Steamboat Rock Presbyterian Union Calvary Baptist and New Providence Friends. Programs run 830 to 1130 am at St Paul with Jesus Our Savior theme closing exercises June 16. Marys hosts an 8 am Mass and 9 am to 3 pm sessions June 5-17 run by Humility of Mary sisters from Ottumwa. Steamboat Rock church runs June 5 to 16 from 9 to 1130 am for pre school through ninth grade. Union Calvary Baptist runs June 5 to 16 9 to 1130 am with Christian Time and Talents theme. New Providence Friends begins June 6 with all day sessions for one week conducted by Celeste Richardson and Eva Clausen. Other Eldora churches also holding Bible school June 12 and ongoing in nearby communities.

65 Percent of County Farms Now in Program

Hardin county farmers reach 65 percent signup for the 1961 feed grain program as of Thursday morning. 1,374 of 2,099 farms participate, idling about 36,268 acres. Estimated payments total 1,544,072 dollars, with first halves mailed. corn price set at 1.14 per bushel next fall. Local ASC workers survey farms. program aims to reduce corn and sorghum acreage from 1959-60 averages.

Public hearing on the Iowa Falls and Owasa school district reorganization is scheduled for Monday June 12 at 8 p.m. in Eldora court room. The petition seeks incorporating 12 Owasa sections into Iowa Falls. Hubbard gets 5 sections and Eldora 22. Eldora may file a separate petition in June. The board studies enrollment and land values to retain an Owasa elementary school.

Work Begins On Eldora Streets

The Benderoff Construction Co. of Des Moines started work Wednesday morning on Eldora streets. About 20 city blocks will get a seal coat with oiling as part of the program. Weather permitting, completion should occur in about ten days.

Eldora Summer School Program Opens in June

The Eldora summer school starts Monday June 5 for eight weeks offering driver education taught by Wm. Nielsen and courses in conversational Spanish American History World History and American Literature makeups under Tom Newcomb. The 15th annual K. E. Reis ingéy and Sons National All Pony Sale concluded Saturday with consignors and buyers from 18 states and one Canadian province. About 1,000 ponies and horses were sold over four days as crowds filled sessions. top ponies averaged $528 for the top ten, $457 for the top 25, $390.40 for the top 50, and $321.85 for the top 100. The top Shetland stallion sold for $700 to Hudson Properties Inc. of Kansas City. the top Shetland mare brought $575 to E L Watkins of Chico, California. Participants hailed from Pennsylvania, Illinois, Arkansas, Georgia, Wisconsin, Indiana, California, Nebraska, Minnesota, New Jersey, Kansas, Texas, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Washington, Alabama, Iowa and Ontario, Canada. Harold Marske of Eldora sold the top load of butcher hogs at the Wednesday Fat Livestock Auction. The hogs averaged 219 points and brought $17 per hundredweight.

First Annual Quarter Horse Sale Success Here

The first annual Quarter Horse Sale drew buyers and breeders from across the country after the three day National All-Pony Sale. Top ten quarters averaged $928 as Mrs. Henry Wolfe of Marshalltown led a horse in front of eager bidders with auctioneer Jack Campbell of Gillette, Wyoming and others nearby.
