Owasa District to Vote March 13 on $48,000 School Building-Gym

Voters in the Owasa consolidated district will decide on issuing 48,000 in bonds for a one story 110 by 70 foot building with basement. The gymnasium will seat 700 to 800 with a 90 foot playing floor, attached to the existing plant, and will house home economics manual training and agriculture in the basement.

Music Concert at Eldora High School Next Wednesday

Eldora High School hosts a music program next Wednesday at 8 p.m. in two parts. Britsch leads the auditorium vocal section featuring baritone Jerry Jondahl, then Aurand directs the gymnasium instrumental segment with a trumpet trio Shirley Follett, Darrell Scott and Robert Bateson. A 16-number program will be printed for sale at the door.

Eldora Polio Drive Raises 1334 and 51314

Eldora city polio fund campaign raised 1334 with total proceeds 51314 20. George Janssen calls it a success though no direct solicitation occurred. Breakdown shows school pupil and teacher donations 295.32 athletic show 310.26 individual and organization contributions 479 coin containers 249.62. Pine Room box yielded 83.93 leading business house containers.

Vets Post to Hold Fox Hunt Sunday

The V.F.W. post plans a fox hunt for Sunday afternoon at the post home. A chili supper was served by Troy Jones. A donation was given to an Iowa City club sponsoring the Highlanders band trip to Scotland.

Creamery elects two to board at Eldora meeting

About 230 members of the Farmers Cooperative Creamery of Eldora gathered at the LO.C.F. hall for the annual meeting. Raymond Clark and Bernnard Reece were elected to the board, with Herb Roll re-elected. Loren Gafke spoke on dairy advertising as the financial report was presented. The noon meal was served by Mrs. Glenn Kurtz. Don Cobb is manager.

Fire Chief Reports City Losses and Calls

Fire chief O K Lamb presented the annual city council report detailing a last year loss of 31 141 across major fires including the Central States blaze and Marks drug store. The department answered 27 city alarms, 16 rural calls, and one town trip, with 25 active firefighters after a new hire.

Plan G I On The Farm Course Here Berry Pleads Guilty

In a surprise move on Thursday, Jack Berry of Iowa Falls pleaded guilty to second degree murder and received a sentence not to exceed 30 years in Fort Madison penitentiary. Judge Sherwood A. Clock ordered the term after Berry agreed to the charge change to avoid a third trial. Berry faced retrial on a first degree murder count tied to the 1947 shooting of Ernie Knott. He had previously been found insane, confined at Anamosa, then declared sound and brought back for trial. Parole eligible in about 12 years.

William M. Miller Services In Eldora at Congregational Church

William M. Miller, 52, long associated with Iowa Training School for Boys, died unexpectedly at his home. Funeral at Congregational church Friday at 2:30 led by Rev. Ralph B. Imes, with burial at Eldora cemetery. Graveside rites by Walter Sayer Post American Legion. Miller born July 26, 1897 in Safe Harbor, Pa, married Adeline Ward in 1923. survivor list includes wife, son Ward Miller, and several siblings and nieces.

BD W Dickinson and J G Heslop Eldora consolidated school board members seek re election as terms expire this year. Petitions with at least 10 signatures must be filed with district secretary Delmar Swasand by noon March 3. The meeting also discussed reestablishing a junior high school safety patrol to direct pedestrians at four corners near 12th and Edgington avenues to improve driver caution.

Eldora Plans Citywide House Plates With Intersections

The plan calls for mounting signs on a two inch pipe set in a concrete foundation or in a cement base about 14 inches above ground. Eldora has about 1000 homes. The city will proceed with street and house numbering on the new plat to determine sign needs, placing two sets at each intersection. The planning board will arrange sale and distribution of the house plates.

Ose Elected to Head Hardin County Bar Group

Lester Ose of Eldora was elected president of the Hardin County Bar Association at its annual meeting in the courthouse opening of the February term. Harold Wippman of Hubbard was named vice-president and Don Wilson of Eldora secretary treasurer. Last year’s officers were Walter Riordan of Hubbard president Ox vice-president and Donald D. Lettow of Iowa Falls secretary-treasurer.

Saddle Club Meeting at Ackley Draws 68 Members

Sixty eight Pine Lake Saddle club members attended a Wednesday evening meeting at Ackley Country club. Cecil Rooks showed pictures from the Iowa Horse and Mule Breeders association. Tull Elected IRHA President in Des Moines Meeting

James E. Tull of Eldora hardware company was elected president of the Iowa Retail Hardware Association at a Des Moines gathering this week. Tull had served as IRHA vice president in 1949 and was announced on WHO newscast Thursday at noon.

PMA Workers Discuss 1950 Corn Acreage

The county PMA committee holds conferences with township committees on corn acreage allotments for farms. Meetings began last week with two committees visiting the county office daily, aiming to finish next Tuesday. Allotments rely on the farm acreage of the past three years but may adjust under seven named reasons including weather, floods, crop failures, reporting accuracy, and changes in operation.

Legion post to install television in club rooms

Members of the Walter Sayer post American Legion committee last week voted to install a television set in the Legion club rooms here. The TV set is expected to be in place by March 1. Their opinion and permission to take their children from classes to serve on the patrol on a voluntary basis. If reaction is favorable, establishment of the patrol is expected to follow.

Veterans Farm Training Program Held In Eldora Planned

Interested veterans will meet V A officials Tuesday at 7 30 p m in the Eldora school cafeteria to learn about a farm training course under the G I Bill. The program, to be supervised by the V A, aims to enroll about 22 area ex servicemen with two years of instruction for owners or leasers and one year for hired men, with classes and on farm work.

Eldora school officials urged a modern one story grade school on the current site to expand capacity and safety, noting regional plans may delay high school construction. Explorer Scouts Plan Hike Saturday Night

The Eldora Explorer post of Boy Scouts planned an overnight hike to Tower Rock southwest of Steamboat Rock for next Saturday night. Former Eldoran Dies in Los Angeles

Information received reports the death of Mrs. Bess McFar Anderson in Los Angeles on February 7. She was the daughter of Rupert McFarland and a longtime Eldora rural mail carrier. Mrs. Ann was aunt to Robert D. Me of Eldora and to Mrs. Helen of St Louis.
