Polio Drive Progress Reported in Hardin County

County Chairman W C Guenther of Eldora says early returns from the Hardin county National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis drive are promising. If townships continue at this rate the county total could top 8500, with half kept for local patient care and a $4750 loan from the national foundation already used for a special campaign.

Polio Benefit At Eldora Draws 600 In Snow

About 600 people packed the Eldora high school gym on a snowy Monday to support the polio fund drive and enjoy a home talent athletic show. Profit reached 310.26 for the Infantile Paralysis Foundation, with advanced ticket sales by Girl Scouts at 110 and concessions netting 25 plus checkroom 7.73 and donation booth 3.56. Door admissions totaled 214.76. All participants donated their services.

Rooks Co Tops State in Ford Implement Sales

Rooks Implement Co. of Eldora received a state award for leading Ford tractor and Dearborn equipment sales in 1949, with Cecil Rooks' salesmen Ralph Sprague and Harold Shaw earning fourth and twenty-seventh in individual sales. Jim Watts joined the staff to lead the appliance division, and Clair Doan now serves in the service department after relocating to Iowa Falls from Eldora.

Wildlife stag dinner at Pine Lake club February 9

Gene Stevens chairs Pine Lake Wildlife Association committee to host a stag fish dinner at the clubhouse Thursday evening with serving starting at five o'clock. Price is one dollar per plate. Committee members include Eastman Nuckolls George Ruben Claude Winters Lester Taylor Dewey Cresco Don Brown and Jerry Greenwall. The event was clarified as a stag dinner for men only after previous miscommunication.

Little Public Reaction to Home Addition

Public reaction to the proposed 106000 dollar expansion of the county home has been slow. Wilson Hadley, chair of the county board, said board members have heard little opinion on enlarging facilities. A bond issue approval by voters would finance the wing, and Hadley suggested timing the question with a reelection to save election costs.

Barker to Speak at Youth Rally at First Congregational

County Attorney Don W. Barker of Iowa Falls will address an interdenominational youth rally sponsored by the Pilgrim Fellowship at First Congregational Church Sunday evening. Soil Meetings Held In Alden This Week

Soil conservation planning meetings in Alden featured Wayne Fisher explaining Hardin county soils origins and development. He reviewed soil productivity from different crop rotations and corn yields. Attendees included Harold Elkins, William Krause Jr, Jim McCord, Edward Meyer, and others from Alden and Iowa Falls. A follow up meeting is set for Monday Feb 6 to cover drainage and erosion control.

County Road Maintainer Repaired After Accident Near Eldora

The county road maintainer lost its cab when it overturned near Jerome Beach farm southeast of Eldora on a thawed road. A surplus cab from Booth & Olson of Sioux City was purchased and installed. Driver Glenn Miller escaped with bruises and shock and returned to work this week.

First round play at Rubew's barber shop reports seven matches through Thursday morning. Upper bracket results include Morgan defeating Harless 3-2, Bekemeier over Cross 3-1, Harris beating Kurtz 3-1, Gaede defeating Foster 3-2 the 1948 champion. Eldora township Farm Bureau will hold its annual meeting next Tuesday at the community house. The program includes a discussion by two debating teams from Iowa State College on What Should Be America foreign policy.

Court Session to Open Here Monday Farm Training For Vets

Eldora consolidated schools board plans discussion Monday on starting a Veterans Home Farm training similar to New Providence and Iowa Falls programs. About 20 to 25 ex servicemen in the area favor the course. A spokesman for veterans will meet the board. The GI bill funded classes run with separate instructors and subsistence allowances, not tied to the high school. In New Providence, Melvin L. Powers of Iowa State teaches 22 veterans from around Providence.

Hatchery Holds Annual Dinner For Stock Owners And Staff

About 50 people gathered for Crosley Farm Store hatchery's annual dinner at Pine Lake Country Club last evening. After the meal, a conference led by EB Crosley and aided by C Be Hackleman and Miles A. Bright covered improving eye and flock handling and new poultry developments to boost chick quality. Bonus checks based on hatchability of eggs produced during the year were prepared for distribution.

THC Stage Show Set For Eldora Hubbard

The International Harvests company presents the Family Party stage show at Hubbard next Tuesday and at Eldora Saturday February 1. Performances start at 8 p.m. in the high school gyms, sponsored by Hubbard Implement Co. An advertisement on page 11 carries the details.

Money pours in to treasurer as licenses surge

Vehicle owners flocked to pay penalties due Feb 1. In two days 530 auto licenses and 185 truck permits were sold in W. H. Lep ley's office. Monday receipts: $10,088 for 270 auto and 100 truck licenses. Tuesday $8,086 for 240 auto and 8 truck tags. January totals rose with 21,481 for vehicle permits, aided by 1950 fee increases. Real and personal property taxes also climbed to 197,618 in January, up from 144,614 a year earlier.

The Republican party will hold a caucus at the courthouse in El Dora at 7 30 p m on Monday Feb 6 for discussion of political issues and planning for the campaign. All Republicans attend as directed by county chairman John L Butter.

Mrs Haywood Hurt In Truck Upset Near Union

Mrs Harry Harwood suffered bruises and shock with a blood clot under an arm when a car skidded on ice and overturned near the Burl Ro farm northeast of Union on Tuesday afternoon. She was taken to Eldora hospital for treatment. The pickup was badly damaged.

Levi Willets on ISC Farm Shortcourse program

Levi Willets of Union is to appear on the Iowa State College farm operators school program February 14 16. He will discuss high profit farm programs and other farmers will present their plans for 1990. Criminal Cases Down to Five on Hardin County Docket

Judge Clock to preside at the February term of Hardin county district court with Grand jurors asked to report Tuesday if County Attorney Don Barker has matters for consideration. Five criminal cases on the docket include the third Berry murder trial, after the Iowa Supreme Court reversed the life-term conviction. F K Schmidt and George M Shafer report to Eldora Planning Board after attending a Waterloo conference on swimming pool construction. They learned Waterloo considers closing its pool and building two riverfront pools costing about 300,000 dollars with bonds repaid in 20 years. Architect T H Flvin discussed school design with a similar pool and expressed willingness to visit Eldora.
