Rabbits and Puppy Auction at Eldora Fundraiser

WNION WHITTEN reports a farmers livestock and farm products youth building benefit auction at Eldora Livestock Sales. Steve Eldora and auctioneer Kenneth Reisinger donated services and Lyle Spurlin assisted as staff. A white rabbit and a black puppy sold for $1.50 then $2.50 each as Reisinger offered to dress them, boosting proceeds to $1,040.

Local Talent Set for Eldora Band Benefit Show

Local amateurs and outside acts perform at the Eldora band benefit to raise funds for a new band shell at the county fairgrounds. Dale Ellsworth will MC with plans for WEIQ A radio and KIOA TV broadcasts, and a grand prize TV set. Tickets 25 cents for children and 1 dollar for adults are on sale in five Eldora shops.

Wrist Watch First Gift In Eldora Gift Days

A 21 jewel ladies Bulova wrist watch is the first gift in Eldora's Gift Days starting next Wednesday. The 14 carat white gold watch is valued at 175 dollars and on display in a store window. Thirty to forty Eldora merchants join a program offering gifts up to 100 dollars including jewelry appliances and home furnishings. One award will be made each Wednesday for several weeks at 3 pm. The winner may be anywhere in town but must claim within three minutes. Registration cards are destroyed after each award.

January Readings Mark Coldest in 20 Years in Area

Unofficial temperatures kept by Charles Frank of Eldora show January 1856 as the coldest in two decades, with nine days below zero and a record 18 degrees below on January 21. Some thermometers read 28 degrees below on that date. The month’s average temperature was the lowest since 1947.

School Move On Schedule For Local Elementary Upgrade

Supt. Paul J. Simons says moving of grade schools from current quarters into the new building is continuing on schedule and should disrupt school hours minimally. He expects all principal units to be in the new building next week and the junior high to move into the present high school late next week.

Cribbage Tourney Slated By Legion

The fifth doubles cribbage tournament of the winter sponsored by the American Legion post here will be held Thursday evening February 9 at the Legion club rooms. Play will begin at 7 30 pm. Contestants are asked to bring a partner.

Grain Firm Loses Judgment in Drier Suit

Snittjer Grain of Wellsburg sued Herman Koch of Grundy Center over a corn drier bought on an oral contract. The blade brake failed after repairs, leading to a 1954 verdict reversal by the Iowa Supreme Court. The jury returned a verdict after deliberation Monday in Wellsburg.

Marketing Skid-Trol Unit For Automobiles Clapsaddle Adds Distributors

Last week Marketing Skid-Trol announced an air pressure passenger car unit for vehicles, joining semi-trailer and school bus models. Midwest ern Manufacturing of Newton makes the units, with two Hardin county school buses already equipped. The system aims to reduce skids and braking distance, with 30 percent faster stopping on dry roads at 60 mph. Costs are 140 dollars installed with a 10 year cylinder guarantee.

Smoker Tickets On Sale For Legion Event In Eldora

Two hundred tickets for an American Legion smoker in Eldora went on sale this week. Iowa governor Leo Hoegh will be the principal speaker. The smoker is set for February 23 with a ham supper at 7 pm. Tickets are sold by Legion members in local stores and at the Legion club room, with the crowd limited to 200.

Hubbard Rites Today For Miler

Final rites for Leland Dutch Mer, 40, Hubbard businessman, will be held at 2 p.m. in Zion church Hubbard. He died unexpectedly of a heart attack at home Tuesday night and had lived in Hubbard with his wife while operating a service station on Highway 65. Surviving are his wife, his father A. C. Carleton D. Beh company of Des Moines bid 250000 dollars to sell Radcliffe community school bonds Monday afternoon. Average rate 2 percent for bonds maturing 1957 to 1967 and 1948 to 1874 with a 383 dollar premium. Trustees named for Hardin County Youth Building policy

Finance committee reveals five trustees and terms for the operating policy of the new Hardin County Youth Building. Maurice Cook, Matty Matheson, St. A. Scott, Mrs. Martin Lauterbach, and Glen Whorrall were announced with terms ranging one to three years and the first meeting scheduled at the extension office. The report details total building cost near 40 thousand dollars, receipts from the fund drive, current balances, outstanding bills, and remaining fundraising needs. The group also planned fundraisers including state farm show concessions and approved purchasing kitchen equipment from Eldora school for about 100 dollars to outfit the old cafeteria for use in the new building.

Final Farmers' School Monday in Eldora

The tenth and last meeting of the farmers night school season will be held Monday at 7 00 p m in the Eldora agriculture room. A discussion on irrigation systems and farm crop irrigation in Iowa will ensue with Soil Conservation Service representatives on soil and fertilizer issues. Instructor Armand Runpel notes the group will weigh pros and cons and stay in touch with progress. Election of councilmen for the coming year will occur at the meeting.
