The Eisenhower administration aims to repeal the excise tax on transportation as part of a broad push to remove taxes that discriminate among industries and consumers. A congressional subcommittee will study the repeal, arguing travel and shipment are vital to industry and the tax’s original purpose has faded.

Des Moines reports Iowa leads national cars per person, with 2.8 occupants per car versus 3.1 nationwide. Iowa was 18th in passenger car registrations last year.
