Fifty years ago Theodore Roosevelt banned Christmas trees from the White House to curb wasteful cutting. Intercession by Gifford Pinchot and practical forest management reversed the ban. Today American forests support both sawlogs and Christmas trees, with 50 million dollars annually moving through the sector and balsam fir leading sales.
