McDonald Buys Johnson Motor and Shell Station

N L McDonald announces the purchase of Johnson Motor Co. and Shell Service Station from Freeman Johnson and R B Hunt in Hardin County Index ad. An opening today and Saturday invites the public with free coffee and donuts. McDonald will lease the garage building while Hunt retains the oil company office on the second floor. Present staff will stay. McDonald plans to move his family to Eldora when housing is secured. Johnson plans indefinite future.

Lay Groundwork For Adult Evening Classes At EHS

A Bidora planning committee met to set groundwork for an adult education program at EHS. January start for 10 weeks planned with enrollment meeting and definite course details to follow. Members include John Butler and Mrs. Edward Wiesner among others. courses under consideration span art Spanish and driver training with home making and agricultural options ongoing.

Dr D M Nyquist of Eldora flew to St Louis Missouri on Wednesday to attend the American Medical Association district meeting where he was scheduled to address the gathering.

Burial services are set for Mrs. Charles Bittelow at St Pauls Lutheran Church Eldora at 2 p.m. She died after a long illness at her home. Born Emma Marie Zielske July 4 1893 Pleasant township she married Charles Stielow February 12 1914 in Eldora. Survived by husband three brothers and other relatives. Pallbearers named with flowers by Miss Mayme Frazer Mrs George Goschike and Mrs Jesse Clinton.

Parking Hearing On 77 Car Free Lot Plan Monday

Eldora city council schedules a public hearing Monday at 7 30 p m to decide if a free parking lot should be established using funds from the parking meter account. The council has optioned two adjacent sites for 13500 and 9000 to build a 77 car lot while both tenants remain. Revenue bonds aim to repay within three to four years.

Plead Guilty Fines Mark Opening of District Court

One man pleaded guilty to an OMVI first offense and another to driving with a suspended license on the opening day of the November term of district court. Judge G R Hill fined Glenn G Maddle 300 dollars and suspended his license 60 days. Melvin C Johnson was fined 100 dollars. The state of Iowa v Adolph R Anderson will be tried by a jury beginning Monday with jurors instructed to report Thursday.

Military Right to Drink Defended by Army

In response to a petition by 80 Hardin county citizens Senator Guy M. Gillette received word that the U S defense department defends the right of military personnel over 21 to drink intoxicating beverages. Maj Gen William E Bergin said sales of alcohol in military messes and clubs are a normal function and oppose restrictive laws that discriminate against service members. The petition’s origin remains unclear with Eldora Newspapers unable to identify the filer at press time.

Bald Eagle Spotted Near Tipton Creek Area

T O Moss man of Hubbard reported sighting what appeared to be an American bald eagle along Tipton creek last week. After monitoring the bird perched in a tall tree, he compared it to a painting by Maynard Reece and identified it by the white head dark body and white tail. Later, area youths were seen near the yard east of Tipton creek possibly seeking thicker timber along the Iowa river.

Music Groups At EHS Announce Concert Plans

Eldora high school vocal and instrumental departments announce their first concert of the season at the school auditorium on December 16. The free public program starts at 7 30 p.m. and features the mixed chorus and the concert band with small groups and solo numbers. Directed jointly by Charles Mahaffey and Leona Froning.

Unofficial November weather figures by Charles Frank note rainfall of .06 inch on November 19 ending a 68 day dry period. November rainfall totals, warmest 76 degrees on November 18, coldest 19 degrees, average 43.1. Comparisons: last year November rainfall one inch, snow on 24 and 26 with up to five inches.

Rites Held For Donald McDonald In Iowa Falls

Donald Hubert McDonald died Monday morning at his home in Iowa Falls after a long life spanning Eldora and Iowa Falls. Born September 12, 1897, in Eldora, he married Pearl Linger in 1921 and Alberta Manwiller in 1952. Survived by Alberta and brothers Gene Linus and W H McDonald, with many predeceased relatives. Funeral held at Harlyn Roe Funeral Home in Iowa Falls with Rev. Peter Peters officiating. burial at Eldora cemetery. Human Heavy Post American Legion assisted. Pallbearers named Stan LeMoind Bob Repp Al Roe Bill Cain Frank Pettibone Isaac Hoy. Flowers managed by Mrs. Bob Repp and Mrs. Stan LeMoind.

Eldora Tigers at Teachers High basketball moved to Thursday

Coach Mac Greene announced the Eldora Tiger Teachers High game, originally set for Saturday December 12, will now be played Thursday December 10. The Cedar Falls second encounter will start at 7 30 p.m.

Three Farm Sales Next Week In Iowa Area

Three farm sales are planned next week in Hardin Grundy and nearby areas. A Tuesday sale near Whitten features 16 head of livestock and farm machinery with K E Reisinger as auctioneer. Another Tuesday sale north of New Providence offers a full line of farm machinery led by Knowles and Heltibridle. On Thursday John Glessner conducts a closing out sale near Whitten with 69 head of livestock including 22 cattle and 41 fall pigs plus machinery, overseen by Lions and Heltibridle. The Eldora dairy sale on tomorrow at Eldora Livestock Sales auctions 90 head of Guernsey and Jersey dairy cattle, with Duke, Holland and Sons owners and Reisinger and Helubridle as auctioneers.

Kindergarten Expert Visits School Here

Miss Barbara Schnelle an expert in kindergarten primary work whose services are made available through the extension division of Iowa State Teachers college made a study of the kindergartens in the Hardin building here last week. Miss Schnelle's services consisted of observing and appraising the local instruction program and making recommendations for further improvement.

Eldora to Welcome Santa and Flying Saucer Event

Eldora Chamber of Commerce sponsors a Christmas program with Santa arriving at 1 50 p m on the courthouse square by city fire truck. A flying saucer drop from a plane piloted by Bill Winthers is planned at 2 p m with 300 to 500 saucers and Thrift Bucks attached to some. A free theatre party for children under 12 is set for 2 p m with tickets from merchants, and a third party is planned for December 12.

Farm Bureau Boosts Goal in Hardin County Drive

Hardin County Farm Bureau raises member drive target to 1717, up 65 from last year. Preparations underway with a January 14 kickoff dinner at the Catholic church basement in Iowa Falls featuring Harry Bryson of the American Farm Bureau staff as speaker. Pine Lake Wildlife Club Hints At Dam Approval At Glad Mall Site

Pine Lake Wildlife Club voted to support a new river dam at the Glad Mall site on the Iowa River near Eldora. Officers elected for 1954 include Guy Reid as president succeeding Harold Creps, with Robert Carson as vice president and C. O. Rubow as secretary treasurer. The group backed by Jay Newcomer aims to win Iowa Conservation Commission approval and rally local support to beautify the river and improve fishing while preserving the existing dam height. The club reported a busy 1953 of conservation work, park upkeep, Explorer Scouts, pheasant rearing increases, and fund-raising through memberships and fish fry sales.

Memorial Fund Buys Suction Machine for Eldora Hospital

The Eldora Memorial hospital installs a new suction type machine for respirator support funded by the Memorial Fund in memory of Greensweig from the Greensweig family. Donations from the Fallut Enemy family and Myrtle Follett are acknowledged. A bedside lamp was also purchased for the fund.
