The annual Nickel Days festival in Eldors drew hundreds of children and many adults for a two day event led by a seated kiltt-clad Decorah janitor. Prizes included nickel awards for categories from boys and girls to floats and costumes with winners named for each division. Special features included five-cent matinee shows at the New Grand Theatre and Explorer Scouts concessions.

Polio Victim Alan Hudspeth 13 In Iowa City Ward
Hardin county reports its eighth polio case of the year, Alan Hudspeth, 13, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hudspeth, living about five miles northwest of Steamboat Rock. He is in the isolation ward of University hospital, Iowa City, with arms partially paralyzed and later legs affected by paralysis. Parents hope he may be out of isolation and able to see him by Sunday.

Fly White Flag In Safety Drive
A white flag was raised on the courthouse pole Tuesday marking the opening of the Drive Right safety campaign by the Iowa Safety Congress. The drive aims to reduce highway deaths through safe driving until September 5. Each county is asked to fly a white flag with a black star for injuries and a red star for deaths. Participants included L. F. Wolcott, Howard Dempsey, George Janssen, Bob Bateson, and Darrell Scott. Stop signs and safety posters were displayed around town to promote the effort.

Owasa School Extension Bids Planned for September Opening
The Owasa consolidated school district plans a 102 by 60 addition with ground floor gymnasium and basement classrooms to be attached to the south side of the present building. Eldora youth 18 reported missing in Korean War
Pfc James L Wallis, 18, of Eldora, missing in action since July while serving with the 24th Infantry Division in Korea. A 1949 Eldora High School graduate, he previously served in Japan after joining the army in May. His parents, Mr and Mrs Paul Wallis, received the news from the Army adjutant general Tuesday.

Whitten welcomes three new instructors as the school opens with a half day session at 1 pm next Monday. Paulson returns for a second year as superintendent, teaching mathematics and chemistry. Jerry Jackson, finishing a master's at Iowa City, will teach commercial. he previously taught at Clearville. Mrs. Nathan Brown of Perrys will teach English and vocal music. Olivet Jestad of Exland will handle first and second grades. Holdovers include Don Rhoads, Sherman Bolis, Mrs. Wallace Cordes, Mrs. Opal Mont, Mona Wilson, and Mrs. Delpha Wood. Kindergarten operates part time with 7] day sessions on Monday Wednesday and Friday. Summer improvements include high school assembly and fifth and sixth grade rooms, new sighting on the first floor, and new flooring in the hot lunch room. Lunch programs run by Mrs. Ira Mabie, assisted by Mrs. Blanche Schriver. Custodian J Kim Wilcox continues after about 20 years in the post.

Two Hardin county pilots Lad Emmert and Bill Winther were summoned to protect a 230 acre potato patch near Williams as freezing temps dropped to 23 degrees on August 20. Flying six feet above ground for three hours they circulated heated air to raise the field temperature and save the crop.

County to Induct 9 Men for Army Draft
Hardin county will furnish the men for induction into the army. Sept 19 the selective service board will receive the quote from state headquarters this week and a full next month's call is expected to be made at two draft board meetings next week. A field of 17 eligibles will name the inductees, with 32 men instructed to report for physical examinations on Sept. 18.
