City Fire Department responded to a Wednesday evening alarm at Valley View Na ttre Elders. Manager Ro said a faulty device caused the alarm but no fire was found. the room was unoccupied and the automatic system triggered by a miswired installation.
Sami Severt of Habhan Neh and Stolee led a performance class in Des Moines on Friday. The event featured grand championship standings and the Habhan Neh contender showcased notable paint work under Mrs Harkless at the Union-Whitten school.
The Livestock Picture notes prices holding near 20.65 Monday and 20.35 Wednesday as fat cattle remain in a steady market. No strictly choice steers or heifers offered last week, but feeders rise in big numbers with many choice calves and yearlings appearing. Feeder cattle sales increase weekly in Eldora and Iowa Falls with direct offerings rising.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday for Bertha Belle Callaway 75 of Gifford at Assembly of God in Eldora. Rev John Perry presided with burial in Melrose Cemetery northeast of Whitten. Surviving are two daughters, one son, eight grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
Mrs. Chuck Amberg attended a workshop at the Hotel Savery in Des Moines for Senator Eugene McCarthy. Stephen Mitchell chaired the Democratic National Convention arrangements and Iowa campaign workers endorsed McCarthy. A canvass in Eldora is set for August 16 17 and volunteers are sought. A Cedar Rapids rally on August 15 will feature national entertainers and a closed circuit broadcast of the senator. Interested attendees may contact Mrs Amberg or Dr L F Parker in Iowa Falls.
Dan Bernard of New Providence won first in the beef rate of gain contest at the Hardin County Fair with an average daily gain of 2.20 pounds, totaling 705 pounds over 220 days. Top ten finishers include Keith Kelow, George Sperger, Renny Rash, Nancy King, Drew Lewis, and others, with gold ratings awarded to King, Kulow, Lewis, Cleveland, and Kix. Heavy rain and heat affected the event and surrounding fair activities. attendees included Mrs. Joe King, Mrs. Gary Karr, and others, with remarks from notable local figures during the Hardin County Fair proceedings.
About seventy people attended a coffee for Mrs Donald Idean Johnson wife of the GOP gubernatorial nominee in Town West Branch held in the First National Bank community room on Tuesday. Hostesses were Mrs Everett Rogers and Mrs.
In a local election the community considered the Farrow property for a new Iowa Falls school site. Voters weighed the Case and Farrow properties near Highway 1a, with ballots split on the preferred location. The measure for a new school holding passed by a narrow margin, directing construction planning.
The Lawn Hill Co op held its annual stockholders meeting on Saturday August 3 re electing Kenneth Cook and Everett Lawler to continue as directors. Holdover directors include Lewis Lawler Kenneth Bernard Wallace Seward Joe Bogue and J C White. About 20 percent of this year's dividends totaling nearly 16000 were distributed with an August 31 1961 42 deferred dividend distribution of about 30000 announced for stockholders. Following lunch Mrs Even Maas Eldorn won the electric broom Cecil Williams Union won the toolbox and tools Cathy Harrell New Providence and Randi Williams New Providence each won a 10 cash prize.
