Eldora youths win R T carrier scholarships

Rick Barnard son of Mr and Mrs Paul Barnard and Tim Zimmermann son of Rev and Mrs John Zimmermann of Eldora win $800 carrier scholarships from the Des Moines Register and Tribune. Barnard also receives a $600 college fund. The two sophomores were among 16 statewide winners chosen on scholastic record citizenship traits service to customers sales record and money handling. Scholarship awards will be presented at a Savery Hotel banquet in Des Moines on Friday May 6, with families and school officials attending.

Marsh Head Soil Commissioners Elected in Hardin District

Jared Marsh of Union was elected chair of the Hardin Soil Conservation District at a recent organizational meeting. He succeeds Dean Kelne, with Reece of New Neek as the third member. Vernon Buckeye and Eileen Hyland reappointed as secretary and clerk respectively. The six-year terms begin, with a new commissioner chosen every two years. District directors oversee soil and water conservation plans, aided by USDA Soil Conservation Service staff Cal Moore and Dean Miller, plus part-time workers.

Owasa Voters Split On Hubbard Reorganization

A Herald report notes in two surveys last week that 47 Owasa school district voters favored reorganizing with Hubbard. In the school board conducted survey 21 chose Eldora, 21 chose Iowa Falls, 57 ballots were not properly answered. The board has not yet determined significance as no meeting followed final counts. The district mailed 193 letters to about 410 voters yielding 146 responses.

Local conservation helpers named for season tasks

Mock Trial for County Seniors Here Monday

A special law day event in the Hardin county courtroom Eldora features a mock trial on Monday May 2 at 1 pm. Work On Hook's To Begin May 16

Construction work on Hook's Royal Blue supermarket, located east of Cable's D X Service Station in Eldora, will begin about May 6. Vinton Construction Co. of Eldora is the contractor for the project.

Assembly Pastors Move Delayed to May Third

The Rev John Perry who was to assume leadership of the Eldora Assembly of God on Sunday May 1 will not move until Tuesday May 3 due to the death of Mrs Perry's mother. The delay was confirmed this week.

Iowa High School Music Contest Leaders to Compete

The mixed chorus of 8 members directed by Mrs Leona Froning and the concert band of 65 members under Charles Mahaffey will perform at the Iowa High School Music Association Large Group State Contest in Nevada on Saturday April 30. The chorus performs about 9:00 a.m. and the band at 10:15 a.m.

Hadley and Vinton Named Typical 4-H Girl and Boy

Donna Hadley daughter of Corwin and Mrs Hadley represented Providence Pearls 4-H at the event held Saturday at the youth building. Local Scout Court Of Honor Tonight

Runkel Named Totowa Senior Citizens Group Leader

Homer Runkel of Eldora has been named to the Iowa Commission for Senior Citizens by Governor Loveless. The commission will develop a long range plan to meet older Iowans' needs and coordinate Iowa's delegation to the White House Conference on Aging in 1961. Funkel has long aided the Eldora Senior Citizens group.

Hardin County Zoning Study Group Formed

A temporary Hardin County zoning commission headed by Stanley Marshall of Steamboat Rock was formed by the county Board of Supervisors. Other members include Lea Knight Steamboat Rock J C White head New Providence Carl Lettow Iowa Falls and James Amundson Radcliffe. The group will study county zoning and report to the Board. favorable findings could lead to a permanent county commission.

Ferguson Brother of Iowa Electric Official Killed in Florida

Joseph W Ferguson brother of Bob Ferguson former manager of Iowa Electric Light and Power Eldora was killed near St Augustine Florida when the car transporting him to a hospital ran out of control. Driver Stanley Sandberg of Bowesmont North Dakota also died in the crash.

Owasa School District Files State Aid Challenge

William M. Freed of Gowrie files in Polk County District Court a petition by the Citizens Committee of Owasa school district to contest the Iowa Department of Public Instruction position on withholding state aid. The group claims 148 signers favor court action to keep the school intact, with 132 supporting litigation and 18 preferring reorganization with Eldora Hubbard or Iowa Falls. The move follows the state’s earlier offer of one more year to reorganize and is seen as a potential test case for other small districts facing reorganization notices.

Eldora cafe change to The Pantry by Union lease

Mrs Gertrude Abendroth of Eldora will lease and operate the Corner Cafe at Union starting next week. She takes possession May 1 for one year from Kenneth Wooten, with remodeling to begin then. The cafe will reopen next Tuesday as The Pantry with Doris Stull in charge through May 1.

Bank Open House Draws 500 Attendees At Union-Whitten

More than five hundred people attended the 1941 open house of the Union-Whitten State Savings Bank at Union on Friday and Saturday. Friends contributed 35 bouquets for the event. Those bouquets and other proceeds were shared with churches and rest homes in the community. Mrs. Charles E. Hire 2 Teachers At Local School

Waltorf Junior College students have returned and signed contracts to teach in the Eldora school system for the coming year. Superintendent Paul J. Simons announced two hires: Marcella Nuehring of Katinha will be third grade teacher and Janice Bridges of Latimer will be a fourth grade instructor. Sharpshairs Found Guilty In Jury Verdict

Clifford F. Sharp of Steamboat Rock was found guilty on a second OMVI charge after a jury deliberation around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. County attorney Win N Dunn led the case for the state, Eldon Huisman of Wellsburg defended. Judge John M M Schaupp set May 7 for appeal. Iowa Falls withdraws offer for future plant opportunity

King noted a third corporation possibility and said Iowa Falls might be considered when ready. The Iowa Falls Committee voted to withdraw their offer and oppose any rush to decide who secures the plant, reporting a $25,000 fund held for a future opportunity.

Eldora Musicians Win Division Ratings At State Contest

Eldora musicians earned top state ratings at the small groups state music contest in Iowa Falls on Saturday. The top picture shows three solo winners Sue Cote Sherry Axtell and Lorene Pratt. bottom picture features the brass sextet and woodwind group with director Charles Mahaffey. This marks the seventh straight year an Eldora clarinet quartet has a Division I ranking.
