Apostle Paul proclaims the core gospel that Christ died for sins was buried and rose on the third day. The risen Christ is the first fruits of those asleep, offering salvation and eternal life to all who believe, making death powerless and the grave defeated.
State Senator Ray Taylor co sponsors legislation to restore the death penalty for certain premeditated murders and kidnapping in Iowa. He cites a 22.9 percent five year rise in murders and argues the measure, based on Texas law, would include execution by electrocution with automatic Supreme Court review and safeguards to prevent wrongful execution.
Pine Lake Saddle Club plans a Pony Express ride for crippled children on Saturday April 9 to raise funds for the Easter Seal Society. Riders travel through Eldora Union and Hubbard to Camp Sunnyside near Des Moines with donations staying in Hardin county. Eldora Kiwanis and Hardin County Extension Office support, with the office closing on Good Friday April 8.
City engineers Wallace Holland Kastler and Schmitz of Mason City will inspect the old river road bridge in Eldora at a cost not to exceed 700 dollars. The bridge has been closed two weeks after being deemed unsafe. Report will classify the bridge and outline steps to restore safety for automobiles and other vehicles.
City officials in Whitten report FHHA approval of a 31000 loan and 28800 grant to upgrade the water system, with 40 year terms at 5 percent interest. The funding, announced by Congressman Charles Gressley in 1978, adds to prior FHHA aid of 102200 loan and 94900 grant for improvements including storage and treatment facilities. Construction of new lines is slated for mid to late summer 1977 as iron and manganese levels in water are addressed.
The Des Moines YMCA Choral Bell Ringers will headline a concert Sunday April 17 at Hubbard gym starting 7 p.m. Sponsored by Hubbard Lions, proceeds aid the Lions sight conservation program in Iowa City. The 80 member group led by Marlow and Frances Cowan has toured the U S and abroad. They perform bells and sacred tunes, billed as Iowas own Singing and Ringing Ambassadors of Fun and Goodwill.
