Damage suit here against Emma Busch dismissed

Judge dismissed a $600 damage suit filed Dec 16 1954 in district court by Ella M. Smith as executor of the Tew Smith estate against Emma J. Busch. The case arose from a Oct 22 1953 auto crash on Highway 65 south of Town Falls in which Beckstein and Smith died. Attorneys tied to Eldora Des Moines and Eldora firms represented the parties.

Second curb mail box up near post office

A second curb type mailing box was placed on the south side of Edgington avenue across from the post office this week. The box is intended to aid east bound traffic and reduce use of the curb box by cars parked on the left side of the street.

Set Date For North Cedar League Track Meet At Cedar Falls

The annual North Cedar League conference track and field meet will be held at Teachers College Cedar Falls on May 9 with preliminaries starting at 4 p m. The conference also approved another football jamboree at Cedar Falls next fall. Eldora school staff attended the meeting.

M and St L Sunday Service Hearing Set For April 26

A hearing on discontinuing Sunday passenger trains from Albia to the north Iowa One served by M and St. L. will be held Tuesday April 26 at Franklin County Court House Hampton. The session was moved from Memorial Hall in Hampton and the Eldora Chamber of Commerce is expected to have a representative attend.

Burglars Enter Radcliffe Home Take 15 Dollars

Radcliffe residents report two men forced entry into Mrs Henry Emberland s home about 3 p m Sunday afternoon. They ransacked the house and obtained 15 dollars before departing. Mrs Emberland widow living on Highway 175 at the south edge of Radcliffe was alone. Afterward she went to neighbors Mr and Mrs Roy Peterson who then called city marshal Andrew Skrougg to the scene.

Burglary at Dewight Long Cafe in Whitten Reported

Two thousand cigarettes were stolen from the Dewight Long Cafe in Whitten during Sunday night theft. Candy bars and cookies also taken. In other news Austin McCullum and Tillie Maisel, both of Eldora, were issued marriage licenses by the county authorities.

Youth Building Plans Advance for Hardin County

An architect drawing of the proposed Hardin County Youth Building will be published early next week. Aimed at a $40,000 goal, current donations total $33,257. The building features an 800-seat auditorium, a 500-seat banquet area, multiple meeting rooms, two dining areas, a possible dormitory, kitchen, stage and restrooms. County Attorney Lester Ose to form a temporary corporation to oversee the project until turnover to the county.

Youth Building Drive Nearing Goal Short by 7000

The county youth building fund remains $7,000 short of a $40,000 goal as of late this week. Contributions total $33,257 by Monday morning. A finance committee meeting is set for Monday night at the county extension office.

Eldora builds new elementary school on east block

Weitz and Co. of Des Moines secured the general contract for Eldora’s new 18 classroom elementary school. Foreman John Evans of Marshalltown says construction should finish in about 220 days, targeting October. Trees were cleared and foundations prepared, footings likely next week as a bulldozer clears the site. Town Electric completed pole removals and new poles on the school railroad property, with the east end street to close and a steel fence planned to bar access.

Safe found in corn crib after burglary at Iowa Falls farm

A 1000 pound safe stolen from a local lumber company last week was recovered Monday afternoon in a corn crib on the Bert Boddy farm south of Iowa Falls. It was found by Gordon Evans and Roy Kruger, two Farmers Cooperative Elevator employees delivering fertilizer. About $150 in cash was missing.

New Operator At Herald-Index Plant

Charles B. Davis aged 24 began work Wednesday as a linotype operator at the Herald-Index Publishing. Davis, a Korean veteran with two years Army service, completed a 17 week course at Midland Linotype School in Charles City. He replaced Emmet Fahnle who left for Nashua. Davis, from Newton, is married.

Six Eldora teachers sign contracts. one to resign

Six Eldora school teachers had returned signed contracts to Supt. Paul J. Simonsberg by Wednesday noon, while another had resigned. Returning staff include Dale DeVault, Armand Ruppel, Margaret Durian, Ruth Lamor, Don Cobb, and Mary Ellen Cox says she will not return next year. Contracts were sent by the Eldora board last week and must be signed or unsigned by April 15. The board approved wage increases ranging from 150 to 300 dollars.

Holy Week Series Begins Thursday At Steamboat

Holy Week services start Thursday at the Presbyterian church in Steamboat Rock as Pastor Dick Harberts announces a guest speaker, Dr David I Berger of the Dubuque University Theological Seminary. Berger, a Dubuque native with a long teaching and pastorate record, will present sermons from April 7 to April 10, including Holy Communion Thursday and messages on Christ’s coming and the risen Lord.

April 19 Deadline Set For Objections To New Providence District

County superintendent Kerm ih Huehn set noon April 19 as the deadline to file written objections to the proposed enlarged New Providence School District. The petition combines New Providence Community School district with parts of Gifford and Liberty districts in Marshall County. The Gifford residents affected mainly send their children to New Providence, while some oppose boundary cuts to neighboring districts. A joint Hardin and Marshall counties boards of education will meet to consider objections if any arise.

Three Iowa State Training School escapees surrender

Three boys from the Iowa State Training School escaped Sunday night by crawling through a transom. David Anderson Robert Clayton and Robert Lymons surrendered Wednesday at Marshalltown after alerts from Des Moines Waterloo and Dubuque authorities. A reported sighting near Conrad was not confirmed.

Eldora Chamber Office Began Redecorating

Eldora Chamber of Commerce office work started this week. A counter and private office will be built along with a meeting table for directors. The space is being painted and Lew Throssel of the Eldora Millwork and Mfg. Co. will furnish the counter. Completion is expected next week.

Boundary plan for new district to be published

Following Monday’s meeting the joint boards will fix the proposed district boundaries and publish a notice. Superintendent Huehn will then set a date for the district election.

County To Offer Several Tracts Of Land For Sale

County auditor Fred A Reed announced a public sale of several land tracts in Hardin County. The sale is Monday April 11 at 10 am in the Board of Supervisors room Eldora. Tracts in Town Fails Hubbard Steamboat Rock Ackley Buckeye Alden and Hardin Township were acquired for non payment of taxes. Officials will inspect lands and set values within a week or ten days. The county board may reject any bids.

Fire destroys roof at Will Eckel farm home near Eldora

A Tuesday morning blaze at the Will Eckel farm home two and a half miles north of Eldora destroyed the roof and damaged upstairs bedrooms. Steamboat Rock and Eldora volunteer firemen battled the fire. Mr and Mrs Eckel, residents for 43 years, recently sold the farm and will move to Eldora this summer.
