Will Moses F Dunn Bequest Sets Union and Purdue Commitments

Moses F Dunn 62 of Bedford bequeaths $1000 to the Union Literary Society and $1000 to the local Beta Theta Pi chapter, with over $100,000 to Purdue University. He also gave to Earlham College and Indiana University. The funeral drew many dignitaries and former classmates. Dunn, born 1842, Hanover 1862, had a notable legal career and legislative service.

U S Higher Education Sees 1914 Student Rise

The 1914 annual report of the commissioner shows 216,493 students enrolled in U S colleges, universities, and technical schools up from 1913 by 14,262. The 567 institutions reflect a 29 drop from the prior year with 93 public and 474 private. Men outnumber women 139,373 to 77,120, up from 128,644 to 73,587 in 1913.

Higher Education Receipts and Growth Report Notes Shifts

The annual report covers college enrollment gains since 1890 and total receipts of 120.6 million with 18.4 million for endowment. Benefactions reach 26.7 million, six institutions exceed 1 million each, and 45 schools report gifts over 100 thousand. State funding rises sharply from 1908 to 1914 while tuition fees grow modestly. Degrees awarded total 26,533 bachelors 5,248 graduates and 749 honorary. Doctor of Philanthropy awarded after examinations by 46 institutions to 446 men and 73 women.

Joseph Gillet, aged 72, is called the oldest "school boy" in the engineering programs at the continuation school. He insists learning never stops and has matriculated eight times, despite earlier denied opportunities, to pursue advancement.
