Commencement Speaker Holliday Leader in Indiana Philanthropy

Mr John H Holliday of Indianapolis will deliver the commencement address on June 13. A Hanover College graduate of 1864 he is widely respected and noted as perhaps Indiana s greatest philanthropist. He founded the Indianapolis News and serves as president of the Union Trust Company of Indianapolis.

Manaugh Edges Culley In Hanover Tennis Final

Hursel Manaugh defeated Wm. Culley 6-1 3-6 6-0 to win the Hanover college tournament final on Memorial Day, before several hundred spectators. The match capped a season as Manaugh, last year’s ICA L champion, dominated after a strong start. Hanover fields a strong team, but few Indiana schools sponsor tennis, with Rose Poly and Franklin remaining active.

Senior Class Day Exercises Held Friday

The class of 1917 held its day in Donnell Chapel with caps and gowns as B F Miller stood in for President Harry Hege. F Scott Sutherland opened with a history, William Mace read class bequests, Alma Macdonnell played piano, Gladys Vestile delivered the class prophecy, and E E Hawkins plus President Millis offered remarks on faculty and friends.

Hanover Completes Eight-Set Win Over Franklin

Hanover swept eight straight sets to defeat Franklin in a tennis meet. Singles scores featured Culley 6 6, Smith 1 3, Manaugh 6 6, Cree craft 3 1. Doubles scores showed Hanover 7 6 and Franklin 5.

Dramatic Club Picnic Ends Year at Hanover College

Hanover college dramatic society held a Friday picnic on the gym porch with eighteen members in wigs and paint enjoying a chicken fruit salad and other foods. Miss Brown and Miss McKenna led the event while Prof Souter and Coach Rider joined. guests Jud Huntley and Clarence Orner attended. The year closed after successful fall and spring plays and promises of better productions with new scenery next year.

Mathews Elected Baseball Captain for 1918 Season

Fred Mathews was chosen captain of the 1918 baseball team at a lettermen meeting. A two year member, Mathews has shown leadership behind the bat this season after a strong first base performance last year. Center fielder Brett led with a .290 average, while Culley, R McNulty and Paulus hit .233 each. The infield batted .223 and the batteries including James, Clapp and Matthews posted .197. the outfield hit .240.
