Manitoba Centennial Screen Salute Premieres July First

The National Film Board presents a three and a half month tour show titled of Many People based on Gabrielle Roy. It travels 3000 miles through 49 communities starting July 1 at Borketon. The production features 16mm and 35mm projections with a wrap around sound system and a 27 by 9 triple screen.

New Age of Majority Into Force September 15

Manitoba lowers age of majority to 18 with the New Age of Majority Act to take effect September 15. The act grants 18 year olds adult privileges such as drinking, entering contracts, suing, and making a will while assuming adult responsibilities. The law was passed by the Manitoba Legislature and proclaimed by order in council with voting age also reduced to 18.

Women Institute Meeting in Hamiota Highlights Birds

The Women’s Institute met on September 1 with 25 members. Rev Dykman introduced Brandon guest Jack Lane who presented slides on Manitoba birds, noting 1600 banded birds and at least 30 species. Treasurer reported $128.24 balance. three dozen spoons ordered. Mrs Bell gave Thought for the Day and reported on the Provincial Convention. Members urged the Dean to oppose bars at the University.

Birdtail River School Board Meets at Crandall

The Birdtail River School Division No. 38 held a regular trustees meeting at Crandall on September 3, 1970 at 8:00 pm. Trustees Fulton Waddell Rapley Randall Butcher Lewycky Hames Fouillard Falcoon Hyndman attended. Correspondence included Northern Film Federation of Manitoba films, Ward Macdonald Partners builders risk policy, and a note from Mrs. D. Haney.

August Bride Honoured at Oak River Shower

August 22 shower in United Church basement honoured Miss Anne Johns bride elect of August 29. Guests included the bride, her mother, and the groom’s mother Mrs Harvey Sheldon. Corsages, a garden themed decor, and a Wishing Well gifts display highlighted proceedings. Mrs John English offered best wishes while Miss Shawna Purdy and Mr Johnny Henry presented gifts. Karen Espey played piano as gifts were opened and a dainty lunch followed.
