NFU Convention Held at Shoal Lake in 1970

The National Farmers Union district convention met August 10 1970 at Ukrainian Hall Shoal Lake with 42 voting delegates and 14 visitors. Roy Cusiier Russell was elected chair with Bruce Medd Beulah as co chair. Resolutions were passed for the National Convention in Winnipeg later that year.

Birdtail River No. 38 Trustees Hold August Meeting

The Birdtail River School Division No. 38 board met in Crandall on August 20 1970 at 8 p.m. Actions included approving corrected minutes noting a tender error, authorizing change orders 5 and 6 for the Birtle Collegiate addition, approving progress payment 11 to Hoffman Construction, releasing a $17 400 deposit, purchasing a carpet conditioner, and re tendering several van routes. The board also named division bus drivers for multiple routes and adjourned to September 3 1970.

School Opens September 9 With Full Day for Students

All elementary and secondary classes begin Wednesday September 9 with buses on Fall Term routes. Teachers work a full day September 8, and staff meetings under the principal prepare for the new term.

Mrs F E Bonner writes from Riverview praising Hamiota Manitoba for a Pony League tournament held August 24 1970. She commends the tidy baseball diamond fair grounds and facilities and thanks the ladies for refreshments. She notes her husband son and the team enjoyed the trip and hopes for future tournaments bringing recognition.

Pleasant surprise birthday party in Hamiota

Mrs Rose McBain celebrated her 75th birthday at home with a pleasant surprise party. Hostesses Louise Bilton and Jean McBain opened gifts and cards while granddaughters Dorean McBain and Janice Champaign set out presents. A cake with 75 candles was cut as photos were taken.

Cardale WI Meets with Members and Visitors

The Womens Institute in Cardale held a meeting on Wednesday August 19 in the church basement with 13 members and six visitors. Highlights included a FWIC convention report, plans to attend Peace Gardens, a trophy engraving decision, a floral demonstration by Myrtle Shanks, and a Centennial Float appreciation lunch.

Sunday School Re organized at McConnell Church

The church Sunday School re organized on August 26 for 1970 71 with Superintendent Mrs Ron McConnell and officers. Regular teachers include Mr J Scott Mrs R Moffat Miss Carol Parker and others. Activities planned include Thanksgiving church decorating White Gift Sunday Family Day Christmas Concert carnation sales and UNICEF collection. Re opening is September 6 at 9am. all children invited.

Travelogue by bus visits Manitoba communities for centennial event

A Greyhound bus carrying 40 senior C.G.1LT girls and 8 leaders stopped at Gordon Long home in Winnipeg then toured Neepawa Dauphin Minnedosa Shoal Lake Hirtle and other towns as part of Camp Council sponsored Travelogue by bus celebrating Manitoba’s Centennial Year. The group met at Griswold with Eva McKay and Indian Women’s Organization leaders and continued to Virden Souris Turtle Mountain and Killarney before Ninette Spruce Woods and back to Winnipeg.
