Birdtail River School Division 38 Holds August Meeting

The Birdtail River School Division No. 38 board met in Crandall on August 31 1972 at 8 PM with trustees Waddell Fulton Rapley Hyn dman Armitage Falloon Mul ake Kreager Butcher Hames and Lewycky present. Motions approved minutes and superintendent report, tenders from Ed Leganchuk Wilfred Carr and Fred Stanchuk, and readings and passage of By-law 13/72 to repeal By-law 4/72 regarding the Pumpkin Plains School site. Adjournment set for September 21 1972 at 8 PM.

Operation Respect Program Active Across Manitoba Municipalities

Eleven Manitoba municipalities including Portage la Prairie Rockwood Pembina South Cypress North Cypress Albert Sifton Ellice Birtle Grandview Miniota join Operation Respect to urge hunters to seek permission, protect farms, and close gates. Signs and materials are available at municipal offices with costs shared by the Wildlife Federation and the provincial department.

Winnipeg Golfer Wins Local Tournament

HAMIOTA based event drew 136 players on September 2 and 3. Clayton Wyburn from Winnipeg captured the Championship Flight with an 18 hole score of 63 while Jim Burney of Charter posted 64 and Dub Mundell of Brandon also 64 for third. Bill Grant of Virden was fourth with 67. Places and scores for 1st and 2nd Flights listed.

Manitoba Tourist Traffic Set for New High This Year

Preliminary traffic data show Manitoba tourist entries rising versus 1971 with June and July counts at the Ontario and Saskatchewan borders up 10 percent, adding about 7 800 non-resident vehicles. U.S. vehicle entries across the border up 24.5 percent for January to June, and camping permits up 26.2 percent reflect growing outdoor recreation demand. During 1972, 217 new accommodation units opened, creating 109 new jobs and bringing total accommodation employment to 10 950.

Houston to Seek NDP Nomination in Federal Election

Ken Houston 40 of Minnedosa announces he will seek the NDP nomination in the upcoming federal election. He has lived in Minnedosa since 1968 and Manitoba since 1963, and came from Hamilton Ontario. The Rev. Ken Houston has served a decade in the United Church ministry in rural Manitoba including Crystal City and Swan Valley.

Bridal shower honors Miss Barbara McLaren in Chumah Hall

About 85 guests attended the August 31 event for Barbara McLaren a bride elect of September 9. Lynda Kidd led a corsage tribute and addressed the bride while Debbie Embury Sally Robinson and Vicki Robinson provided music and a skit. A lunch followed with committee service and gratitude expressed by Barbara. Houston described for context as a construction figure and community leader with Ken and Lois Minnedosa ties and three children.

Wayne and Gordon Miller hosted a double miscellaneous shower in Isabella Community Centre for brides to be Diana Partridge of Hamiota and Dianna Lawrence of Crandall. Mothers and brides received corsages as gifts were presented, with an evening of gratitude and a lunch served. Diana and Wayne wed September 2 in Hamiota United Church, while Dianna and Gordon plan Crandall United Church nuptials on September 9.

Park Residence News Visitors and Family Gatherings

Several Winnipeg and Brandon residents visited Mrs. Butler and Mrs. Bardwell last week. Notable arrivals included Miss Phyllis Rankin from Winnipeg and Miss Margaret Mitchell with Mrs. Geo Johns. A family gathering occurred at Oak Lake beach with praise for a wonderful time.
