Senior Citizens Honoured in Hamiota Banquet

Reeve Elmer P. Houck chaired a banquet for 204 senior citizens at Chumah Hall United Church. Mayor Caldwell gave greetings. Rev. Ralph E. Clark and Morris McGregor spoke. Mrs Myrtle Caldwell received an autographed baseball from Councillor Harold McLaren.

The Birdtail River School Division No. 38 held an 8 p.m. meeting at Crandall on October 22 1970 with trustees listed. Administrative assistant appointment and school updates

Gil Fearnall is appointed administrative assistant to W A LeBlanc, Manitoba Division Canadian Red Cross Society. Fearnall, who joined in 1957 as provincial organiser for the blood transfusion service, later became director in 1961. The board discussed teacher placements, in services for elementary staff, budgeting, library book purchases, and urged safeguards against overnight student fund storage.

Manitoba towns clean up weeds during centennial year

Hamiota and Rivers in western Manitoba led a regional weed control push in 1970 with local councillors joining forces with the weed supervisor. Don Kennedy sprayed boulevards on four miles of Hamiota streets in May using 2.40 at 16 ounces per acre to curb dandelions safely. Weeds Chief J. O. Forbes notes several communities including Portage la Prairie Miami Steinbach and Morden also joined the effort.

Art Club Holds Second Meeting at Collegiate

The Hamiota Art Club met Friday evening at the Collegiate for its second term session. Alma Dixon instructed a Still Life charcoal sketch class. Members include Mrs Estelle Hall Mrs Mabel Wright Mrs Phyllis August and Mrs Alice Russell who carried home notable studies.

Angus harvests 80 acres of rain bow trout for profit test

Wayne Angus ran a 10 000 trout experiment last spring and now harvests 80 acres of fish at Selkirk. Fish cost 65 per thousand and weigh 5 to 13 ounces. Initial 60 cent per pound payment expected. fish marketed to Fresh Water Fish Marketing Corporation. Gills removed, meat iced and shipped from Gimli to Erickson then Selkirk. Three year provincial study in Erickson aims to prove seeding feasibility in local sloughs. This rural Manitoba project is unique in the Hamitoa area.

U C W Meeting Held At Mrs Wrights Home

The U C W held its regular monthly meeting at Mrs J Wrights home with Mrs Robin Hedley opening with a thanksgiving prayer. Mrs B Baldwin led worship and business followed. Mrs C Robinson requested supply items including a layette for November. Mrs E Newton spoke on the origin of Thanksgiving and its various customs.
