The Manitoba Telephone System will distribute the new Provincial Telephone Directory starting in November. It contains 756 pages, 20 more than 1969, with about 188000 copies printed. Customers should dispose of old directories to avoid wrong numbers. delivery varies by location and the cover shows the prairie crocus.
The Women's Institute met on November 2 to tour the Brandon Mental Hospital. Seventeen members attended. Treasurer reported 251.69 on hand. Donations planned for hospital gifts. Centennial spoons sold. Missing library book The Rim of the Prairie discussed. Red Cross materials depleted. 37 attended the 4-H leaders banquet.
Campbell Flowers of Hamitoa, Detroit, owned by Malcolm Campbell, has been selected as a member of the Florists' Transworld Delivery Association. FTD links a network of over 11,000 U S and Canadian members and 18,000 Interflora partners with guaranteed service across the Americas and most parts of the world.
Hon. Howard Pawley explains Manitoba's Automobile Insurance Act requires a driver to be both qualified and licensed to obtain coverage. He notes under the proposed universal plan drivers must pay premiums with their licenses, shifting part of the cost from owners to drivers, while unlicensed drivers gain no protection.
CGIT met in Chumah Hall on October 7 with two leaders present. Officers elected include President Bonnie Coombs Vice President Cheryl McMillan Secretary Marsha Strong Treasurer Sharon Carlson Press Sally Robinson. Plans set for biweekly meetings and church decorating for Thanksgiving and Christmas and UNICEF collection on October 31. Donations for Christmas decorations welcomed.
Nine members gathered October 20 at Mrs Inza Pollock home for the McConnell Woman’s Institute meeting. The group opened with the WI Creed, reviewed September minutes and treasurer’s report, read correspondence, and discussed a history book with member photos since 1946. A quilt project was approved with each member making four blocks.
HAMIOTA The Art Club met last week and continued charcoal sketches. Ann Perlmutter brought various vegetables and the group studied. Alma Dixon completed the best sketch with realistic shading. Others mentioned include Mary Coupland Mab el Stinson and Ella Anderson for her appealing approach.
Manitoba Centennial Corporation honored 128 farms for long family ownership and early settlement. The event at Centennial Concert Hall featured Lieut Governor W. J. McKeag, speaker Dean L. Shebeski, and performances by Bobby Gimby and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. The James Hourie farm was named Farm of the Century with a Cairn unveiled by Premier Schreyer.
In Sandy Lake on October 24, the Girls A Division final ended 1-0 after three overtimes as Sandy Lake beat Minnedosa to win. The Boys final saw Sandy Lake defeat Rivers No 1 5-1 for the title after a 4-3 semifinal upset of Oak River.
On October 20 Oak River Explorers held their first meeting in the United Church with eleven explorers present. Elected were Aeleen Sclater chief explorer Sherrie Genung vice president Marianne Angus keeper of the log Cheryle Pennington keeper of the treasure Cindy Campbell reporter Donna Pennington money making convenor. New members joining include Elizabeth Perry Veronica Uzell Shelly Haggerty Cathy Genung Leanne Coulson Joycelyn Hayhurst. A barbecue earlier that month was hosted by Chief Councillor Mrs Mary Sclater.
