A new organization created by residents of Hamiota and district aims to promote public relations and stimulate growth in commercial industrial and agricultural sectors. Members discussed potential local industries and will call a public meeting soon to elect officers and directors. Citizens are urged to support the effort and watch for the Open Meeting announcement.
The Christian Education Committee of the Birtle-Miniota Wider Parish plans a two session fall event for 12 to 14 year olds October 23 24 with games worship films and a sleepover The theme The Age of Aquarius love and peace features a weiner roast zodiac study and sleeping arrangements Chaperones will supervise and breakfast is extra cost 50c for the evening and 25c more for overnight with breakfast Contact Linda Barteaux or local pastors for details.
Ken Donaldson moved to Hamiota to work for Manitoba Hydro as a District Assistant replacing Jim Loucks who left for Winnipeg in August 1970. Donaldson began with Manitoba Hydro in July 1964, previously lived in Portage la Prairie, and now resides with his wife Beverly and their nine month old son Scott. He plans to take up ski-dooing and continues fishing and hunting.
Manitoba changes to the Highway Traffic Act raise the reportable damage threshold to more than 200 dollars for all vehicles involved and require a windshield sticker from police before repair for damage over 100 dollars. The measure aims to curb hit and run and ensure police review in key cases.
The United Church Messengers and Explorers held their second meeting on Friday October 16 at 4 15 p m in the church parlors with Judy Little chairing. Treasurer Elaine Johns reported 1 15 on hand and a shopping spree planned to raise funds via a Poor Girls Catalogue. Braille study materials were shared and leadership changes announced with Clayton Rosenberger graduating, Gail Gregory taking Messenger rep duties, and Lee ann Schweitzer replaced as Secretary.
The Oak River Auxiliary met October 14 with nine members present. President Grace Bullock led the session as Donna White accepted a $50 cheque for her Grade XI marks, while a Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal donation was made and Betty Henry won the door prize. The group plans the November meeting and urges all members to attend.
The Ladies' Club met October 15 at Mrs S Lewis's home with eighteen members. Group 1 leader Marlene Andrew led worship assisted by Janie Lewis Dorothy Amy and Betty Smith. The theme was Thanksgiving. Hospital report by Mildred Hazlewood.
The Decker Community met October 13 in the church basement to honor Rev and Mrs McColl on their 25th wedding anniversary. Guests welcomed them with corsage and boutonniere, then escorted them to chairs as the Wedding March played. An eight piece stainless steel cutlery set and cake plate were presented, and Mr McColl thanked the community. Donna Lints led singing with Cheryl Decker at the piano, Blaine Little played, Wanda Sunley sang, and a delicious lunch concluded the event.
Mrs Art Morris hosted a trou sseau tea in Hamiota on October 6 honoring her daughter Bessie Morris bride elect. Guests included family members and many signed the guest book with about seventy attendees.
Hamiota School Bands start instruction for a new year with Mr. T Good as band master. Senior band and majorettes performed in 16 parades during late June and July, visiting Neepawa Brandon Killarney Virden Oak River and Cardale. Ron Houck led the summer program. junior band members Earl Johnston and Garth Strachan helped as bus drivers. Community support aided 3 band members and 5 majorettes at Peace Gardens camps. A fall general meeting will address membership decline and future plans.
