Manitoba Allows Studded Tires Through Winter

Manitoba will allow studded tires on vehicles from November 1 to April 30. Minister Joseph Borowski said all provinces except Ontario permit their use. Ontario plans to ban out of province studded tires, prompting cross border discussions and possible enforcement at the border.

U C W Meet Opens After Summer Break

The U C W resumed meetings at Mrs. John Rankin’s home on October 8. Mrs. Argue led devotion for Thanksgiving with prayers readings and hymns. Four visitors joined fourteen members as business discussed including Hamiota plans Rummage Bake Sale and catalog distribution. Officer elections updated the vice presidents. Tea closed the session.

Birdtail River School Board Meets in Crandall Oct 8 1970

The Birdtail River School Division No. 38 held a regular meeting at Crandall on Thursday October 8 1970 at 8 p m with Trustees Fulton Waddell Rapley Arm itage Hames Butcher Lewyck Hyndman Fouillard Falloon Randell in attendance Inspector Funk. The board approved minutes and various items including Change Order No 7 on the Birtle Collegiate addition for 62 59 and Progress Payment No 13 for 59 055 67. They applied to the Department of Youth and Education for permission to implement a typing option course at Shoal Lake Collegiate and authorized the superintendent to supply equipment and hire a teacher if approved. Local Archery Club Formation to Begin in Hamiota

Three distinguished archers from Canada and the world will visit Hamiota Collegiate Gymnasium on October 17 and 18 at 2 00 p.m. to train beginners and demonstrate archery. They will help launch a club with training leading to a January formation, using equipment supplied by the Recreation Committee to invite all ages to participate.

Fire Extinguisher Training For Hospital Staff

On Thursday October 8 1970 Mr H G Thiessen assistant Fire Commissioner from Branden trained about 35 hospital staff in various fire extinguishers and their use. A short practice session followed. The aim is to equip staff especially students and new employees to protect patients and the building against fire.

Anniversary Celebrated at Decker for Delbridge Couple

A large gathering honored Mr. and Mrs. Bill Delbridge on their 40th wedding anniversary at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Lints in Decker. About 215 guests enjoyed a Come and Go Tea with flowers gifts and family photos.

Clocks Set Back One Hour In Manitoba This October

Standard time returns to Manitoba as clocks revert from 3 a.m. to 2 a.m. on October 25 under the Official Time Act of 1967. Uniform daylight saving time runs from the last Sunday in April to the last Sunday in October across the province.

Miss Karen Cooke Feted in Decker Shower

Miss Karen Cooke bride elect for October 24 was guest of honor at a Decker United Church shower on October 10. Corsages, chairs, and gifts were arranged while Barbara Lints played piano and Wanda Sunley performed after images. Delighted guests enjoyed a lunch served by the committee.

Oak River 4-H selects new treasurer and sets meeting dates

The Oak River 4H met on October 9 with 15 members present. Minutes of the last meeting were read and two errors found. Maxine Hutchings was elected treasurer after Brenda Johns resigned. Ideas for fun and pleasure were discussed. Next meeting is scheduled for November 13. The meeting adjourned.

UCW Meeting Recap at Mrs W Gregory Home

The UCW October meeting chaired by Mrs. Hunter included a silence for Mrs. Rivers and a prayer by Mrs. Lints. Worship was led by Mrs. Knight and Mrs. Decker with scripture from Psalm 92 and Corinthians 12. A $10 donation to Camp Wasaga and a wedding catering plan for October 24 were noted.

Women’s Institute Meeting Highlights at Hamiota

The Women’s Institute met in Hamiota on October 6 with 21 members. Treasurer reported $199.69 on hand and a note on Centennial Spoons with no new orders after sale. 4H leaders dinner planned for late October and Red Cross convenor noted 306 sewn articles and 18 afghans sent. A program titled The Family-1970 was presented by Mrs. Chappell and committee.
