Tax reform bill sets new 1988 personal credits and rates
Parliament's dissolution halted most bills but Bill C-139 passed, reshaping federal personal taxes for 1988. Rates drop to 26 percent on 27 501 to 55 000 and 29 percent above 55 001, with a 3 percent surtax until sales tax reform. New non-refundable credits replace exemptions, affecting basic, marriage, dependents, age 65 plus, disability, and child credits. Medical and CPP QPP credits updated. forms will be more complex.
