Province Wins Court Rulings on Land Valuations for Diver sion and Floodway

Manitoba government land expropriation cases for Portage diversion and Red River floodway upheld. Galloway estate awarded $24 000 on 114.71 acres, down from $71 300 sought. Birdshill parcel 7.92 acres awarded $650 after offer of $715 and request of $1 500. Court costs assigned to plaintiffs in both matters.

Mrs. Charlotte Corey of Hamiota dies after illness

Mrs. Charlotte Corey longtime Hamiota pioneer dies after a lengthy illness leading to her sudden death at Assiniboine Hospital on October 6 1967. Funeral service held at McConnell Bros Chapel with Rev R E Clark officiating and interment at Russell Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers listed with local names. Born Sundridge Ontario she married Stuart Corley in 1908 leaving three children Margaret R W Kennedy and Robert J. Grandchildren and great grandchildren noted. Husband predeceased her in 1952.

Mrs. Fulton, president of Manitoba Women’s Institutes and vice president of FWIC, addressed the Crandall Arrow River group with notes from the Guelph convention. June heat challenged concentration as sessions and tours continued, including a visit to Adelaide Hoodless Homestead and Ottawa bylaw revisions.

Local UCW Meet Sets Plans and 1968 Nominations

The United Church Women Executive met October 11 in the Choir room with Mrs. J. E. Hudson presiding. After dues, the bank balance stood at 633.93 dollars. Local nominations for 1968 were requested by the Presbyterial Nominating Committee, with local acceptors named. Donations to the Supply Bale must be delivered by October 30 to Mrs. P. Davis for Vancouver shipment. The UCW will provide study materials and films for midweek groups and the Film Council fee of 10 dollars was approved. Rallies are planned at Clanwilliam October 30, Kenton October 31, Minotota November 1, and Russell November 2.

Birdtail River School Division No. 38 trustees met at Shoal Lake on October 12 1967 with Superintendent Davison and executive director A C Anderson present. Resolutions included adopting September minutes approving correspondence, paying invoices for St Lazare renovations and vehicle needs, and authorizing adjustments for transport of extra students before adjourning to October 23.

Auto Insurance Hearings Set For December Public Hearing

The 13 member Legislative committee on automobile insurance will hear public briefs at 10 a.m. December 4 in Room 354 of the Legislative Building. It will study costs, justify rate increases, and examine government options, mid term cancellations, and filing claims.

Rivers Pipe Band Reports 1967 Activities and Expo Trip

The Rivers Pipe Band played 42 engagements across Manitoba Saskatchewan and nearby towns in 1967. They traveled about 5000 miles by road and 3500 miles by train for the Expo tour with five performances in Montreal and stops in Ottawa and Capreol. The band draws members from Rivers and surrounding districts and plans training October 22 at No 1 Hangar CFB Rivers Base, aiming for about 129 total members.

Banded Ducks Aid Wildlife Biologists

Some 3 500 ducks southbound from Lake Dauphin this fall carry special aluminum leg bands indicating species sex age and a unique number. Ten species were banded with mallards 1 646 pin tails 872 blue winged teal 696 among others. Band returns help biologists track migration wintering areas and hunter kills to assess population harvests.

Meyer W W Kirk Enters Into Rest

Mr. W W Kirk died October 7 at Hamiota Hospital after a brief illness. Born March 7, 1888 in Scotia Man he lived in Hamiota and Brandon before retiring to Hamiota in 1947. He married Jenette Hogeland in 1912 and Ida Brown in 1958. two daughters survive plus a sister and a stepson. Funeral was October 10 at Hamiota United Church with Masonic and choir members noted.
