Weir Named Manitoba Premier at Age 33
Walter C. Weir was sworn in as Manitoba's fifteenth premier, succeeding Duff Roblin. He also serves as minister of federal provincial relations and chairs the Manitoba development authority. Weir, born January 7, 1929 at High Bluff, has a long record in Minnedosa municipal affairs and provincial cabinet roles. He is married to Harriet Tommie Thompson with four children.

Hamiota returns to the South West Hockey League after a four year absence to play in the North Division against Cardale Foxwarren Mc Auley Minnedosa and defending champion Neepawa. The 20 game schedule runs 2 home and 2 away games per opponent with 10 slated in December and 10 in January. Playoffs start early February. Club executives include Mike Wright manager Harvey Pollock coach Dick Coombs equipment manager Bob Brooks transportation and Dick Prawdzik secretary treasurer. Anyone interested in playing is invited to attend practices when ice is ready Schedule next week.

Manitoba Farmers Face Higher Nitrogen Needs Next Year
Farmers plan to grow cereal crops must add more nitrogen. Analyses of 2,700 field tests show 93 percent of stubble land and 38 percent of fallow land require nitrogen, up from last year. 70 percent of the 93 percent of Manitoba stubble land need 60 pounds per acre, while the remaining 23 percent require 20 to 60 pounds. Fallow land needing nitrogen requires 30 pounds per acre. Early soil samples to the Provincial Soil Testing Service at the University of Manitoba should yield recommendations in January. Manitoba livestock groups meet in Brandon December 5 to 8 with swine and cattle breeder meetings and related events at the Brandon Extension Centre and Prince Edward Hotel. The four-day program includes honors at the Royal Winter Fair and a Family Farm meeting course on December 1.
