Manitoba to Discontinue Assigned Risk Auto Insurance Plan

Manitoba will scrap the assigned risk plan for auto insurance next year. The treasurer, Hon. Gurney Evans, says insurers will guarantee coverage through normal channels, but drivers with bad records may face only the statutory minimum limits of 35,000 liability and 250 deductible for collision. The plan, created in 1945, currently includes 1.9 percent of motorists and cross-subsidies for high risk drivers will be replaced by industry efforts to insure all drivers.
