Manitoba Opposes Grain Transport Rate Increases
Agriculture Minister Bill Uruski and Transportation Minister John Plohman urged against WGTA rate hikes, arguing producers can ill afford higher freight. They warned a 28 percent rise could raise costs to 16.50 per tonne over ten years, favoring direct railway subsidies to boost efficiency while opposing payments to farmers. Manitoba contends higher prices hurt rural communities and stress the malting industry, calling for extended statutory rates and greater federal cost sharing.
