Manitoba Deems Federal Urban Transit Funds Inadequate

Urban Affairs Minister Gerald Mercier labels the federal Urban Transportation Assistance Program funds as totally inadequate for Manitoba. He cites a 10.2 million provincial share of a 230 million national total over five years, about 2 million annually, noting funds are redirected from existing programs and do not add new commitments. He warns regular grade crossings, overpasses, transit equipment, and urban projects will exceed the allotted annual amount and expresses disappointment for Manitoba cities awaiting substantial federal aid.
