Hamiota progress on Phase I fund drive nears 600000 goal
Community drive for the Hamiota and District Sports Complex reports a nearing 600000 target. A 50000 grant from the Manitoba Community Services Council plus 280000 on hand and 55000 expected from 1989 pledges strengthen the push. Additional fundraising and pledges may bring in 75000, with potential 100000 Manitoba Places grant reduced to 50000-60000. Potential federal funding sought. Phase II foresees moving the artificial ice plant and adding hockey boards, aiming 150000 more. Dinner theatre and car raffle tickets promoted by Al Gordon at the IGA. Planned completion next summer and use of a new rink.

Brandon to Receive $200,000 for Baseball Facilities
Manitoba Sport Minister Jim Ernst announced a one-time grant of 200000 to the City of Brandon for two world class baseball venues. The funds will upgrade Kinsmen Memorial Stadium and construct Westbran Stadium to attract national and international youth championships.

WINNIPEG An amendment to the Manitoba Cattle Producers Act re instates the check off provision to fund the association. Agriculture Minister Glen Findlay says the deduction will support beef promotion research and consumer education while remaining voluntary for producers who obtain an authorization number to exempt themselves for an indefinite period.

Hamiota Skating Club completes restructuring for season
The Hamiota Skating Club held its final 1988 meeting with 3 executives and 3 parents. New officers are President Janice Kerr Vice President Pat Schweitzer Treasurer Shirley McMurachy Secretary JoAnn Ramsey Badge Coordinator Sandra Cowling. Fees stay at 20 per child with 50 family max. CanSkate instructor Sandra Cowling to be assisted as required. 84 skaters registered, up from 80. A CanSkate course in Rivers October 30 will be funded. Safety rules include helmets mitts for CanSkate and helmet face mask stick for CanPower. Parents share rink duties and supervision on ice as needed. Lessons run Fridays for young skaters and Mondays for CanPower when ice is available.

Tom and Eleanor Sedgwick were celebrated at their Ninth Street home as Tom retires from Ward One council after 13 years. Shirley Dale voiced best wishes while Stewart Riddell gave a butterfly wall ornament and loonies to mark their friendship and community life.
