Dallas and Charlene Smith and family were greeted by Oakner citizens and escorted toward Hamiota on May 15. Constable Dick Fogarty and Dr. Andy Hodge met them at Oakner corner before they continued in.
A hometown gathering in Hamiota celebrated Dallas Smith returning from pro hockey. The event featured remarks by Al Robertson and local officials, with Smith recounting team histories and his Stanley Cup achievement. About 700 attendees, including family and fans, attended the ceremony and autographs followed. The Hamiota Minor Hockey Association plans a windup on June 6 with Smith as guest.
The Birdtail River School Division No. 38 held a regular meeting in Shoal Lake on May 14 1970 at 8:00 p m with trustees Fulton Waddell Rapley Randall Hames Lewycky Fouillard Hyndman Armitage Butcher and Falloon present. The board adopted April 30 1970 minutes and supported Brandon School Division No. 40 in seeking a Regional Vocational Secondary School. They approved financial statements committee reports and various payments including a St Lazare Elementary addition and a Birtle Collegiate project. The meeting adjourned to May 28 1970. An addendum notes a Centennial float readiness and parade arrangements.
Rivers hosts 189 delegates for the Birtle District Women's Institute convention on May 4 with Kirkham's Bridge as co host. Mrs R Birch opened, Members discussed Centennial year and MIW histories, project reports, and future plans while stressing youth involvement and pollution study.
Oak River W I met May 5 in Memorial Hall presided by Mrs. Van Hedley. Fourteen members attended and discussed the Centennial Garden and Manitoba Centennial Plantings booklet. They planned a May 29 Centennial Dance with prizes and an Old Time Lunch, and funded a Cancer Canvas and cemetery restoration projects.
Hamiota Red Sox announce season opener Sunday May 24 at 2:00 p.m. against Brandon Cloverleafs. The Cloverleafs, last year’s third place team, rely on pitching and veteran players as they seek a return to form.
The Hamiota Centennial Committee plans a plaque in the Museum Building to honor rural schools within the municipality. It will record each school's name, opening and closing dates, and land location. The Cairn committee offers markers with plans and prices and seeks short histories of each school. Contact R. N. Beamish.
