Hamiota Red Sox begin a new season after a rough previous year ending in Souris where Souris won the league title. This year the Sox schedule starts May 20 with a home opener against Dauphin and includes Brandon Riverside Virden and Souris matchups through August, with season tickets encouraged.
Cincinnati Reds announce Curly Haas and Murray Zuk of Spurts named as scouts for the National League club in Manitoba. Fred J. Goodman, Reds supervisor of scouts, notes Haas and Zak bring strong baseball heads and deep Manitoba ties. They travel widely across the province and stay connected with distant towns.
Manitoba’s Department of Mines and Natural Resources announces new sport fishing rules including revised licence fees for residents and non residents. Open seasons vary by zone with limits on sturgeon and trout waters. Spearfishing becomes allowed with strict gear rules permits and site restrictions. Bow and arrow fishing also gains a season with free permits.
The 4-H Call Club held its final meeting May 5 at Arnold Gray's home. Speakers included Doug Argue Dale McKinnon Brent Hazelwood Rhonda Lawson and Donna White. Demonstrations on halter making were shown. Achievement Day set for June 7 at the Hamiota Fairgrounds starting at 2:00 p.m. Judge will be Mr. Ross Short.
The May meeting of the United Ladies Club was held at Rev. and Mrs. Holtzman’s home in Strathclair. Mrs. Hedley led worship and final bake sale plans were set. Members were asked to bring clean used clothing for a June bale and leave items in the church basement.
The Senior and Junior Bands with the Majorettes performed Friday night to a responsive audience. Gregory Robinson Wilson won festival top in their classes with June Ried on piano and Ken Smith on saxophone. Pins were awarded to Harvey Brown and Ronald Davis, who plans to study Fine Arts at the University of Manitoba this fall. Majorettes will host a drill night in the auditorium soon.
The seventh regular Oak River Home Economics Club meeting met May 2 in the Elementary School basement with 14 members and 3 leaders present. Members reviewed the year’s lessons and discussed the Strathclair Rally. Leaders introduced Home Nursing as a new project for the coming year.
The Hamiota Women’s Institute met on Tuesday May 6 with 19 members and visitors. Treasurer reported 97.90 on hand. Four afghans entered for the Red Cross box and more wool was received. Cards, bake sale, and 4H night were discussed. Books packed for Win nipeg Book Mart. Funds approved for a Grade 8 pupil English improvement and two high school pupils to the United Nations Seminar in Brandon in August. Pro vincial convention in Winnipeg in June to be attended by Mrs. Robertson and Mrs. Andrew. District Convention in Hamiota May 13 urged. Mrs. Ward shared slides from her Arizona trip.
Nine members attended a Gymkhana meeting on March 25 with roll call answered by events and a program for First Year members on bridle parts and Second and Third Year members on bits and medicines. Members logged horse name breed color and age.
The column voices skepticism about leaving riches behind and suggests tax relief as a remedy. It mocks entitlement and praises practical effort with a quip about a more proactive citizenry overheard at a St Regis coffee retreat.
Oak River members elected officers for the coming year including President Harvey Stewart Vice President Bob Westbrook Secretary Don Simms and Treasurer Aubre y Hume. Ted Coulson Len Strachan Ron Bray Bill Sinclair Jack Paxton named to the executive. Jerry Belton chosen dance hall manager with dances starting June 6. Sports day set for August 4 civic holiday.
The Decker C.G.I.T. met May 7 in a church basement. They discussed old business, proposed taking mothers to Newdale for a Chinese dinner instead of a mother and daughter banquet, and planned a basket picnic for May 28 with each member inviting a friend.
