Cut-Backs Spark Controversy Over School Programs
At a March 20 meeting the Birdtail River School Division board voted 4 to 3 to discontinue Industrial Arts Home Economics and Music. A teachers association survey showed overwhelming parent support for continuing these programs four to one for IA and HE and two to one for Music. Some parents criticized the abrupt action and questioned survey validity while noting rural urban education gaps and consolidation concerns. The association plans to meet with the board to urge program continuation.

Shuffleboard Tournament a Success in Hamiota 1979
The annual floor shuffleboard tournament at the Community Centre in Hamiota ran April 23–24 with 84 players, up to 20 more than last year. Roy Kirk and Kate Sunley won the final A event for the Gulf Trophy, while Stan Wale and Ruby Gray won B. High scorers were Dick Bomford and Rachael Routledge with 271 points. low scorers were Mary Van Buskirk and Etta English.
