Fertilizer Boosts Alfalfa Yield And Quality, Manitoba Study

University of Manitoba researchers report alfalfa responds strongly to phosphorus potassium and sulfur when moisture is adequate. Fertilized plots yielded 10.5 tonnes per hectare versus 1.8 on unfertilized sandy loam, with protein rising from 11–10% to 24–22% across cuts. On clay soil, phosphorus only raised yield and protein. Soper urges soil and tissue testing to guide fertilization and notes early spring sod seeding improves native hay and pasture stands with notably higher protein in sod seeded areas.
