The Hamiota festival wrapped with a Friday concert in Collegiate Auditorium, featuring about 900 students in piano, instrumental, folk dancing, gymnastics, and speech arts. Adjudicators praised choirs from Hamiota United Church and Kenton Elementary, with senior acts delighting audiences. Hi Lites Concert is set for Brandon on June 15.
Hugh Wilson won the Instrumental section trophy at the Neepawa Festival and received a $25 bursary for two weeks at the Neepawa Fine Arts Festival held in July. He will tape music for the Hi- Lites concert in Brandon on June 15 and perform at the Provincial Exhibition in Winnipeg on May 17. This is the third time the Neepawa Trophy has gone to Hamiota after Holly Johnston and Sally Robinson in prior years.
Gwen McTavish of Oak River attended the Rebekah Lodge No 44 visit on April 7 with about 25 members due to weather. A donation for summer treats was given to Charleswood Home in Winnipeg. Grace Lodge No 35 hosted District No 14 meeting April 21 with around 100 in attendance.
The Hamiota Senior Citizens report a pleasant winter with weekly Wednesday gatherings for cards, Bingo, and music. Guests included Don and George Pollock, Jack Boyd, Harmony Music Makers, violinists Leslie Robertson and Carl Caldwell, Glenda Knight, Garnet Knight, and slides by Tom Sedgwick and Eleanor. The New Horizons Local Committee donated $25 for Bingo prizes as 53 members participated. A season finale on April 23 featured a two hour card session followed by a pot luck supper. Hosts were recognized for their hospitality.
The Women's Institute held a successful April 19 event to benefit the Community Centre. Activities included a book sale jar guessing game darts balloons and a display of local crafts plus eight bingo games won by several members and a whist round with prizes. Elgin Hyndman and Elmer Koscielny were honored guests before a quilt draw planned for May 6 at 8 p.m. at Inza Pollock's.
The Ladies Auxiliary to the Canadian Legion met in Hamiota on April 22 with thirteen members. President Mrs. Alice Pedlow led. minutes were read. a thank you from Mrs. Murray Bray and a letter for the Christs Society were acknowledged. They voted $10 to buy furniture for Peace Gardens. Delegates Eva Lee and Mary Harman reported. eleven Miota members attended and the group won the Hamilton Trophy for the largest membership increase, now displayed in Municipal Hall. Two new members were initiated. lunch followed.
