Hamiota Hospital Construction Advances Amid Progress

District notes show the hospital project begun January 3 now eleven weeks in, with east wing extension, a new south wing, and doctors’ offices renovation near completion. Ed Bikowski of Hoffman Construction Ltd. reports the work ahead of schedule and on track for completion by early August.

Mission Study Focuses on Africa By Hamiota Group

In February the C.G.L.T. unit conducted a mission study centered on Africa. Members learned about issues, heard stories, drew flags, played games, and wove mats. A tea on February 12 raised about $38. next meeting is April 5.

UCW Meeting At Mrs M Little Home March 16

The UCW gathered at Mrs M Little’s home on Thursday March 16 at 2 00 PM with 12 present. Mrs Peacock led worship followed by hymns Bible reading and a short skit on the theme Criticism. Stamps and used cards were sent to Toronto and India respectively. Mrs Nichol delivered 16 lbs of used cards to St Amant ward for retarded children in St Vital and read a tribute to the late Dr Sid Gilchrist a missionary in Africa who and his wife and daughter died in a highway crash between Calgary and Edmonton.

Anniversary Celebrated for Mr and Mrs Knight at Oak River

A Come and Go Tea on March 18 at the W I hall marked the 40th wedding anniversary of Mr and Mrs William Knight. Married March 18 1932 in Pope Manitoba they farmed 30 years and retired to the village in 1962.

Ladies Club Meet at Dorothy Amy’s Home

The Ladies Club met at Dorothy Amy’s home on March 16 1972 with thirteen members present. A brief business session occurred as members worked on a quilt and signed cards. Betty Janelle Bernice and Dorothy prepared the lunch for the afternoon.

Oak River Presbytery Area Meeting Attends Three-Charge Session

A presbytery area meeting for the Oak River Parkland Parish and Rivers charges was held March 15 at Oak River United Church. Rev Kenneth Houst on chaired the session amid concerns over rural population decline and youth attendance. Delegates discussed present church status future plans and inter-charge cooperation with emphasis on sustaining social and spiritual life amid redevelopment programs.

Decker Figure Skating Club Carnival Recap

The Decker The Figure Skating Club held a successful carnival on March 2 with a bake sale and performances by club members. Pre schoolers opened with Teddy Bears picnic, then Dutch Drill and Hawaiian Girls numbers, plus solos by Mrs. Nancy Fogarty. Races closed the evening with winners across age groups led by Scott Knight and Kim Bonner among others.

Canadian Shorthorn Association holds annual meeting in Moneton

The Annual Meeting of the Canadian Shorthorn Association took place in Moneton New Brunswick February 14 through 18, 1972. Jack Wright of McConnell is noted as President of the Manitoba Provincial Association. The 1972 officers and directors are pictured with seated and standing members from various provinces. Next year the annual meeting will be held in Manitoba.

Legion Auxiliary Yearly Report from Hamiota

The Legion Auxiliary records a year of irregular meetings from January to March due to the cold. April 7 saw a small gathering at Mrs. Robinson’s. funds were allocated for an adopted veteran’s needs and Cenotaph repairs. May brought new member Mrs. Kennedy and plantings at the Cenotaph. raffles funded a chaise lounge, with proceeds noted. Remaining months covered meetings at various homes, scholarship disbursement, gifts to the veteran, poppy sale baskets, and charitable donations to Salvation Army, Legion Xmas Tree fund, and St. John’s Ambulance. December’s Xmas party closed the year with thanks to retiring officers and encouragement to new ones.

4 H Beef Club Meets With Plans And Speeches

The fifth 4 H Beef Club meeting, on March 14 at the Community Centre, drew 12 members and 3 leaders. Curling fees for the March 18 bonspiel were collected, and a March 30 concert and dance was planned for 8 p.m. Speeches by McConnell, Johnson, Wright and others highlighted the session.

4H Pony Club meets in Hamiota for curling and planning

On March 14 the 4H Pony Club gathered after school at the curling rink for instruction and a short game. The group then met at Mr. Dixon’s home to plan the Pot Luck Supper for the 4H bonspiel on March 18 and 19, with fourteen members attending.

Local Bonspiel Draws 25 Rinks From Four Clubs

Twenty five rinks from Miniota Hamiota Kenton Oak River Home Ec Clubs Oakner and McConnell Beef Cubs and the Hamiota Pony Club joined a two day bonspiel March 18 and 19. About 175 curlers with parents and leaders attended a pot luck supper Saturday night. Gerry McKay and Bob Thompson of Brandon spoke about trips with Canadas baseball team and encouraged hard work for future travel opportunities.
