Birdtail River School Board Meets in Crandall March 9 1972

The Birdtail River School Division No. 38 held a regular trustees meeting in Crandall on March 9 at 8 00 p m. Present were trustees Waddell Butcher Fulton Rapley Hynd man Hames Falloon Clark Mulaire Lewycky with delegation J Wiens Birtie. Motions approved minutes correspondence bus modifications and notices to be filed. The board adjourned to March 23 at 7 00 p m with adjournment time 12 00 midnight.

4H Club Jamboree and Meetings Report

The March 3 4H jamboree in Chumah Hall drew 66 junior members from Miniota Hamiota McConnell Oakner Oak River and Kenton with tom baron and hazel mitchell guiding. Other notes cover hamiota senior meeting slides from mrs vance and a virden junior jamboree held february 27 with a curling bonspiel planned for march 17 18.

Hamiota Student Wins Bursary

Shelley Frances Wales of Hamiota receives the 1970-71 Birdtail River Division Manitoba Teachers Society bursary of 75 dollars. She graduated from Hamiota Collegiate with an average above 80 percent and was treasurer of the student council, yearbook committee, drama club and senior basketball team. She attends the University of Winnipeg and weighs a career in psychiatry. she is the daughter of Mrs. Anne Wales.

U C W Meet of Oak River Unit Three

Oak River U C W Unit 3 met at Mrs. Morcom’s home with two visitors Mrs Hilda Day and Mrs Ednad Mc Neill. Morcom led business and prayer, a rose was presented to Mrs M Shamray, hymn singing by Mrs Griffiths and Miss Bowman, readings on Christian missionaries and mandates, study led by Mrs Helen Clubb, and a tasting of African food from Pac recipe sheet.

Card Party Held at Fraternal Hall in Hamiota

The Rebekah and Forester Lodges sponsored another successful card party in the Fraternal Hall on Friday March 10 1972. Winners were Ladies 1st Mrs D Emerson 2nd Mrs Nicholls and Gentlemen 1st Mr Harvey Smith 2nd Mr Harvey Kirk. Pass to next party awarded to Mrs Harmon and Mr Rothwell. Lunch was served and attendees eagerly anticipate the March 24 gathering at 8 00 p.m. Everyone Welcome.

Art Club Workshop Draws Community Support in Hamiota

The Hamiota Art Club held a Saturday workshop in the Elementary School Auditorium with 29 children 34 teens and adults in attendance. Wayne Bruckner of Winnipeg led sessions aided by local volunteers Jennifer Lawson Estelle Hall Bell Cartney Nora McConnell and Anne Perlmutter.

District Hospital Notes Hamiota District

The Hospital Aid met February 25 in the community room with Mrs. Hudson presiding and fourteen districts represented. Minutes were adopted. The Florence Nightingale Tea is set for May 10 in Chumah Hall. Dr. Walmsley departs soon as renovations progress. Ambulance calls total ten with one Winnipeg trip. Delegates to the Regional meeting in Virden May 11 were Mrs. Hames and Mrs. Griffith. A yearend hospital report was presented and $2,000 was donated for patient comfort furnishings from the memorial fund honoring several named donors. The supper meeting is planned for June 23 at Lenore with speaker Mr. J Rankin. Mezuzah Benediction ends the meeting.

McKenzie Seed Expands Ties with Mexico Ben Jardin Venture

Farm Notes reports A E McKenzie Ltd of Brandon gains minority stake in Ben Jardin S A Mexico to enable tariff free sales of seed and horticulture products across LAFTA. McKenzie will ship seeds peat moss and packaging to Ben Jardin which will market cut flowers gardening aids and new seed lines in Canada. Mexico’s Berentsen family controls Ben Jardin and will convert a plant for this venture as McKenzie aims at wider Latin American trade and Manitoba job impact.

Women’s Institute Meeting in Hamiota Plans Charity Drive

The W I met in Hamiota on March 7 with 16 members and two visitors. A cancer drive will be organized by volunteers. Reports noted Red Cross sewing totals including 315 sewn items and 23 small sweaters. Various talks covered agriculture education culture and United Nations topics. Books for Book Mart due April 15 and a fashion fitness talk was given.

Ladies Bonspiel Results at Hamiota

The Ladies Pick Your Time Bonspiel opened March 6 with 43 rinks, 24 local and 19 visiting. Winners included Lynn Ewbank top hat event, Janet Zemianski Shamrock, Phyllis August Leprechaun, and Barb Daniels first extra end. Banquet followed. life members and many donors thanked.
