Budget sparks NFU charge of farm finance double standard
In Saskatoon on March 12 1986 NFU President Wayne Easter accused Finance Minister Michael Wilson’s budget of a national farm finance double standard. He blasted the 6 percent commodity based mortgages as limited to Farm Credit clients, leaving others with insolvent loans to rely on weak debt review panels and banks. He warned of rising farm foreclosures and higher production costs from fuel taxes and non statutory cuts, predicting harsher impacts through 1990 91.
