Manitoba to raise sales tax by one percent in budget plan

Winnipeg outlines tax measures to aid job creation while keeping the deficit in check. The plan raises the retail sales tax from five to six percent March 6 and hikes gas and diesel levies, tobacco duties, liquor markups, and large corporate taxes. Proceeds fund a new Manitoba job fund with no personal income tax hike.

Last Set of Winter Games Planned in Westman Finals

This weekend March 12 and 13 marks the final round of Westman Winter Games regional finals. Four hundred twenty five athletes from the region compete in six events hosted by Souris for Mens Masters Curling Old Timers Hockey and Table Tennis Hartney for Mens Basketball Elgin for Co ed Broomball and Brandon for final seedings at all events. Come out and support your teams.

Southwest A W I Hold Spring Meeting at Hamiota

The Southwest A Woman's Institute regional board met March 2 in Hamiota with 21 members from 15 institutes. Maud Leland led prayers and opening thoughts, minutes items included bookmarks for the A C W W Convention, possible Wisconsin tour, a new treasurer Mary Heise, and difficulty finding a regional representative. W I Day noted, a Portage La Prairie Provincial Convention skit by Leland was planned, and a $100 honorarium for the Provincial President was debated alongside a proposed regional dues increase to $2 per member for 1983. The next meeting is September 14, with coffee provided by Janice Appleyard.

Birdtail River Music Festival in Miniota May 25

Music festival schedule promotes arts education and youth achievement. Entry deadline March 25, with multiple categories in singing, band and instrumental tests, and an oral spelling contest. Hamiota Red Cross Donor Clinic Successful

The Hamiota Red Cross Society reports a successful donor clinic with 288 registrations including 63 new donors. Volunteers staffed the event and they collected 263 units of blood, about 9 percent turnaway, below the usual 10 percent. Officials fear possible loss of next year’s clinic due to Winnipeg budget constraints and a 35 day out date bag issue.
