Hospital By-law Passes in Hamiota District Vote

On Monday March 1 ratepayers voted to approve the Hospital By-law with a 93.8 percent favorable result. Totals show 1443 For and 95 Against across municipalities including Hamiota Blanshard Miniota Woodworth and the village of Hamiota. The measure authorizes expansion and renovation of Hamiota District Hospital facilities.

Hepatitis Cases Down In Manitoba Report

Winnipeg notes the worst of the hepatitis epidemic seems over with 136 Manitoba cases in January versus 200 year ago. Immune serum globulin is distributed to households with an infected member. Measles, German measles, typhoid paratyphoid, psittacosis, and a rural mumps outbreak are reported with varying case counts and control measures.

The W I group met at Mrs. Olive Newtons home on February 16 with three members present. They reviewed the January minutes and treasurer’s report, discussed hospital book donations for the Children’s Hospital Book Mark, and planned a quilting bee for March 16 at Mrs. Gwen Hamiltons home. Mrs. Inza Pollock reported on the Hospital, the raffle was won by Mrs. Eileen Paterson, and Mrs. Gloria Bell led a discussion on Looking at Family Planning before adjournment and lunch.

Strachan Caps Aggre gate Honors At Hamiota Bonspiel

Hamiota hosts wrapped up its 76th annual bonspiel with four of six firsts in six events. Aggregate winner is Garth Strachan of Hamiota. Also winning teams include Hamiota Hotel, Hamiota Co-op, Universal Motors, Houck Caldwell and Merchants with top placements by Crandall, Oak River, Kenton, Virden, Shoal Lake, Brand on, Kenton, and Haminta clubs.

Hamiota’s H C I Drama Night on February 22 drew about 400 attendees for four plays It’s Gold In Them That Hills The Laughing Ghost Great Smokes and Whodunit The event honored Doug Argue as best actor Mary Lou Hodge best actress Joyce Scott best director and best play Whodunit Additional commendations went to Debbie Embury Elaine McConnell Wanda Sunley Scott Coupe and Judy Garton The organizers thanked all helpers for a successful night.

Crop Tribunal Two Named To Crop Tribunal Two Named To

Two Manitoba farmers were named to the three member crop insurance appeal tribunal. Agricultural Minister Sam Uskiw announced the appointments of Michael M. Shawluk of Oakburn and Jacob W Heinrichs of Halbstadt. W. J. Parker remains on the tribunal as former Manitoba Pool Elevators president. The tribunal hears appeals from disputes between insured farmers and Manitoba Crop Insurance Corporation.

CMHA Meet Speaker Urges Mental Health Awareness

CMHA Manitoba Division field representative Dave Dollis spoke at a local CMHA meeting in the Elementary School on February 15. He cited rising mental illness and urged public education to reduce stigma, noting one in six Canadians require treatment and that thousands of deaths by self harm occurred in 1976.

Manitoba Plans Provincial Sweepstakes Bill

The Manitoba government intends to introduce a bill to create a provincial sweepstakes plan similar to the Centennial Lottery. Attorney General Al Mackling says the plan would be administered by his department and that nonprofit organizations may sell tickets to raise funds for community projects.

Hamiota Teams Rally In Birdtail Basketball Action

Hamiota boys win Birdtail division with a 44-38 defeat of Birtle while girls fall 20-16 in a close game. The girls rebound to 23-17 over Portage Collegiate and 41-23 over Arthur Meighen. Boys split at Portage 45-21 over Meighen and 44-29 to the Collegiate.
