Ottawa announces July 1981 increases in OAS and GIS benefits under Monique Begin. The basic OAS rises to 214.86, GIS max to 215.72, with combined totals for individuals and couples outlined along with Spouse's Allowance changes and eligibility notes. Increases are indexed quarterly by cost of living.
Finance Minister Brian Ransom announces Manitoba will acquire 42 950 Northland Bank shares for 536 875 dollars after amendments to the federal Bank Act allow provinces to hold chartered bank stock. The move follows a five per cent share deposit agreement with Saskatchewan and new provincial financial authority.
Manitoba employers are being surveyed to determine skilled manpower needs. An 11 question questionnaire is mailed to over 2,000 employers focusing on shortages and training. Survey conducted by the Research Branch in cooperation with the Canadian Manufacturers Association.
Within a week of the June 3 census, 90 percent of questionnaires have been mailed back in Manitoba, Southern Saskatchewan, and Northwestern Ontario. Regional Director Stan Howell says rural areas may still await pickups and urges patience. Some remote regions lack delivery. representatives will fill forms in one visit, and everyone should be reached by June 30. Information remains confidential and all Canadians are legally required to respond.
