Beiseker Adopts Striped Skunk Mascot Squirt for Village Symbol
In Beiseker Alberta the council chose Mephitis mephitis the striped skunk as the village mascot. Squirt the skunk will be honored with a seven foot statue on a six foot base costing about 20000 dollars with most funding from a provincial tourism grant. Opposition says the mascot could hurt the village’s image though supporters note early tourist inquiries and merchandise plans. Beiseker is also noted as the only Canadian village named after a banker T L Beiseker, adding to its idiosyncratic local lore.
