Family Law Changes Proposed in House
Manitoba moves to broaden child and parent rights under proposed Family Law changes. Illegitimate children gain equal maintenance and inheritance rights, and courts may consider a child's views in protective measures. Fathers of illegitimate children gain more notification and participation rights in child matters including adoption. Common law spouses could claim maintenance after five years with financial dependence. A Family Division may be created and a revised family law booklet issued. Wheat Board Inks 2.1 Million Tonnes Wheat Sale To China
The Canadian Wheat Board announced a cash sale of 2.1 million tonnes of wheat to China for shipment August 1983 to January 1984 from Pacific Coast ports. Grades include CWRS No 1 2 3 and CWRW No 1 2. The deal, negotiated in Peking with Cerailfood, extends the long term agreement for the 1982 85 period.

Peace Garden Awarded Provincial Grant For Maintenance
Al Mackling announced a 50200 grant from his department to the International Peace Garden to aid maintenance and operating costs in the current fiscal year. Established in the 1930s as a Canada United States memorial, the garden sits on a 2300 acre cross border site financed by Canada, Manitoba, and North Dakota.
