A local store closes after Bill Barrett ends a 45 year career in retail and related work. Returning from World War II in 1946 he built a family business starting with the Massey Harris agency and BA Oil, later running a general store with his brother Bud before taking sole ownership.

Senior Support Services Group tour to Peace Gardens highlights
July 10 outing with 50 travelers from Decker Hamiota Kenton and Lenore aboard a 39 passenger Golden Mile Bus and a Handi Van driven by Jack and Red McConnell. They picnicked at Peace Gardens, walked a swinging bridge, lunched, then dined at Rob Roys in Brandon before returning to Hamiota. Next trip planned to Wild Kingdom Game Farm Zoo Dauphin August 7 with calls for helpers and more cars.

Parade winners announced in Hamiota Fair
Over 40 entries took part in the July 19, 1990 Hamiota Fair Parade sponsored by the Hamiota Pioneer Club Museum. Thanks to RCMP detachment, school band, parade marshal Delmar Kirk, CKLQ, judges, and sponsors. Prizes awarded for decorated car or float, animals on parade, decorated bicycle, and best commercial float with Ducks Unlimited winning the top commercial prize.

Women’s Institute Disbands After 75 Years
Crandall Crandall Women’s Institute held its last meeting on July 10 after 75 years of service to the community. Members voted to disperse assets to the community centre and church as lifestyles changed and attendance waned. A farewell dinner followed on July 17 at Prime Tyme Restaurant in Kenton with eight attendees and two absentees.

Family and friends held the July 10th gathering at Hillcrest Place Brandon to celebrate Bill Delbridge’s 87th birthday. Four daughters and their families hosted with Linda MacKay assisting. great grandchildren led a short program and a Sing A Long followed. The Hamiota Handivan Service in Manitoba secures a 10 000 grant from the province plus 11 000 from the Manitoba Community Services Council and 25 000 from the federal Accessible Vehicle Acquisitions Program to buy a 14 passenger van costing over 51 000. The service relies on volunteers and operated 957 trips covering 6066 kilometres in 1989 with most trips for quality of life activities.
