In Victoria Times July 7, 1980 Bill Coombs explains how Hamiota Street may trace its name to Hamiota Manitoba a village 57 miles northwest of Brandon. The Manitoba town was originally Hamilton renamed to avoid confusion with Hamilton Ontario and shortened with ota meaning at this place in Cree.
The Dale family reunion of Arthur and Mary Dale descendants gathered in Hamiota on July 5 and 6. Attendees from Ontario Manitoba and British Columbia joined over 100 relatives for registrations a corsage ceremony a buffet supper a dance contest and a church service and open house concluding with Auld Lang Syne.
The Canadian Wheat Board announced that farmers may store off-Board feed grain deliveries at country elevators through July 31, 1980. The move aims to boost deliveries by offering future settlement, replacing the previous cash settlement required at delivery.
A July bridal shower featured Mrs. Barbara Angus and Mrs. Carol Forsyth singing. Guests were greeted by a polar bear rug in a Churchill Manitoba setting. Brenda thanked attendees and invited visits for coffee. Laura Angus and others performed before lunch was served.
The Hamiota Men’s Open Summer Golf Tournament on July 5 and 6 drew 146 players. Championship winners: Mundell, Hook, Wyburn, Penton. Flight victors include Lamb Hunter Morcomb Lee Perkins Ramsay Westbrook Miller Silliphant Doran Gregory Crampain Anderson Kirk Laraway Boothe with Oak Lake and Brandon golfers prominent.
