First female wins Earnest Yergens Aviation Scholarship
Miss Lesley Kingdon receives the Earnest Yergens Aviation Scholarship on May 7 at the Regina Flying Club to fund her helicopter licence. She is the first woman honored, and she works for Aero Avia. Kingdon is daughter of Ken and (Mrs.) Kingdon of Oak River and granddaughter of Annie Kingdon of Clanwillian and Roy Sedgwick of Minnedosa.

Churchill Northern Studies Centre Opens in Winnipeg Region
Northern studies centre opened by Minister James Downey in Churchill features $280,000 renovations to expand research and classroom space. Housed in a former National Research Council building, the center aims to diversify the local economy and attract visitors studying wildlife and climate. The facility is named for Bishop Robidoux, first CNSC board chairman, who died in 1987 air crash. Non profit funding comes mainly from the Department of Education and government research grants.

Fund Raising Committee Eyed Fair Tickets and Ice Rink Squares
A July 6 1988 Fund Raising Committee meeting approved selling pull tickets at the July 18 fair with prizes including a clock radio coffee mill and other items. A new plan would sell rink squares at 20 dollars each with donor names printed on the board.

Special Olympics Manitoba Games Report
Five Rolling Dale clients competed in the Manitoba Special Olympics Summer Games from June 9 to 11, 1988 in Winnipeg. Masters Wilbert Buchanan and August Franssen earned bronze in team bowling, while Sheldon Zentner won gold in both individual and team bowling. Women’s Masters Julia McDowell and Lorraine Kasprick represented the team with coach Ed Shaw and a University of Manitoba campus stay. Before Manitoba, fourteen competitors participated in the Westman Regional Special Olympics in Brandon on June 4, 1988.
