Recognition Night honors long-serving Birdtail River staff

The Birdtail River School Division held its Recognition Night at Ukrainian Hall in Shoal Lake with about one hundred attendees. M.T.S. president Val Harrar hosted, presenting certificates to retiring teachers and long-serving staff, and noting 25 year service pins for several employees.

Mortgage burning at Kenton Legion Club Room

A large crowd celebrated the burning of the Legion Club Room mortgage in Kenton with remarks by President John Finnie and words of thanks from Dick Hunt Charlie Finnie and Clarence Braun. Door prizes went to Olive Hunt Frances Wilson and Wally Gray. The event preceded the June 20 golf tournament at Hamiota where 52 golfers competed.

Arrow River cairn and plaque unveiled near Pocket's Lake

The June 22, 1987 ceremony unveiled a cairn overlooking Pocket's Lake west of Arrow River to mark a Ducks Unlimited Canada conservation project. The plaque credits a 1985 build by DU Canada with Manitoba cooperation and local landowners, funded by Harold Rae and a luncheon followed for guests.

MSOS Summer Games Bring 950 Seniors to Brandon

Hamiota hosts MSOS 55 Plus Provincial Games with over 950 Manitoba seniors competing in sports card games and crafts. Westman Region wins plaque for most points. closing banquet at the Keystone Centre drew 500 attendees.

International Camp for Youth planned

The Red Cross organizes an International Leadership Camp for 9 to 12 graders from August 16 to 21 on Lake Winnipeg. Participants join workshops on human rights current events and peace education to build leadership skills and community involvement. The camp costs 100 dollars with financial aid available.
