Willis Is Installed Manitoba Lieutenant Governor in Formal Ceremony

Errick French Willis took the oath of allegiance and office in the Manitoba legislative building on Friday January 15 succeeding J S McDiarmid who served 60 years. The ceremony featured army bands guards and a 15 gun salute as Willis and his wife departed for Government House. His first state duty is reading the Speech from the Throne at the opening of the legislature on Tuesday January 19.

Birdtail River School Board Meets at Shoal Lake

The Birdtail River School Division meets January 15 1960 with seven trustees including Mr Funk Mr Tomlinson of Moyers and Mr Daley of Brunswick present The board approves minutes and correspondence and orders purchase of 115 lift top Brunswick desks six double pedestal teacher desks and chairs to match The board defeats an amendment to buy desks and awards the contract to Brunswick They will order Royal Commission Report copies for each trustee and seek solicitor advice on appealing a transfer decision and adjourn to January 23

Annual Meeting Of Christ Church Held

The annual meeting of Christ Church Hamiota was held Friday evening in the church crypt with Rev P D Marsh presiding. Reports from all branches were read and approved. Nominations were adopted for Rector's Warden L Budd People’s Warden H Lawson Auditor W Dillon Vestry members Mesdames Dillon Kreager Mesrs V Little M Francis M Pedrow and R Lepine. A lunch was served by the W A members.

Hospital District No 7A L A Holds Meeting

The Hamiota Hospital District No TA Ladies Aid held their January meeting with 15 districts represented. Mrs Ralph Fraser the new president chaired. Miss Dum matron reported 958 admissions 168 newborns 3 sets of twins and average stay lengthened. There were 95 major and 338 minor operations and staff included 7 registered nurses 6 licensed practical nurses. A surplus existed at November end aided by the Hospital Aid. A loan helped a district girl begin nurse training.

January Meeting of Hamiota W.A. Reports Meals and Visit

The Hamiota W.A. held its January meeting in the church parlor with 18 members and one visitor. Highlights included a report by Mrs. Ken Fraser on her visit to Prairie Christian Training Centre and a committee update on meals revenue and new church kitchen improvements.

Hamiota Students Shine in Provincial Essay Contest

Hamiota Collegiate students dominate the Manitoba Provincial Wide Essay Contest on Social Work. Joan Hudson earned third place and a four dollar cash prize, traveling to Winnipeg for a tea reception and CBC TV appearance with her parents and English teacher Mrs. Rampling. Six others from the school received honorable mention, including Ralph Beamish Marilyn Pollock and Verna Moore.
