Former Lieutenant Governor John Stewart McDiarmid resigns Friday from Manitoba post. He urges public service with commitment to country and public life, emphasising duty over politics.
Obituary notices honor Walter Thomas Wright and former Manitoba lieutenant governor Vic McDiarmid. Wright, 78, died January 9 in Deer Lodge Hospital and is buried in Hamiota after services in January. McDiarmid, born 1882 in Scotland, served as minister of Mines and Natural Resources, later lieutenant governor, with a long public career in Manitoba.
William Brown died suddenly January 3 in Calgary where he spent the winter. Born January 7, 1896 in Latitatos Saskatchewan he moved through education to a Beret career then in 1936 to Daaker Sacrins and retired to Brandon in 1947. He is survived by his wife Janet four brothers and two sisters. Funeral services were held at Brockie Donovan Chapel Brandon with Rev S. Searle officiating and interment in Brandon cemetery. Pallbearers included A L Decker W F Rivers R Doherty R Mitchell E Krane and S Eastley.
Touring Japanese Olympic hockey squad arrives in Brandon for a January 22 exhibition against the Manitoba Junior Hockey League leaders, the Brandon Wheat Kings. Tickets available through the Wheat City Arena box office.
At the village inaugural meeting Secretary Treasurer Wm T Andrew swore in Mayor F J Coombs and Councillor R N Woods. New committee chairmen were appointed including L M Caldwell Deputy Mayor and Finance Geo Pitendreigh Public Health J W Jamieson Fire Water and Light R N Woods Public Works and Mayor F J Coombs Police Commissioner.
Premier Duff Roblin pushes a Do It Now campaign to boost winter employment through local voluntary winter employment committees across Manitoba. The program aims to spread capital works, renovations, and equipment production over a year, aided by federal and municipal cooperation and new construction techniques to reduce winter costs.
