Life in Nigeria through a week of contrasts

A diary from Kalabar recounts daily life including power outages, rain soaked treks, market buys like grapefruit and guava, a trip to the new International Airport, and encounters with locals such as Ekpo. The writer describes transport mishaps, a peeping Tom, a disfigured native, a mother taking her children to their home, and concerns over beds, visas, and a stalled building project. The piece notes religious riots in the north, a forthcoming election with suspected vote buying, and weekends of concerts, dancing, and Christmas meals before a December trip to the Cameroons.
